[from r/Eve] Eve University wiki no longer on Google?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/1rgogex/eve_university_wiki_no_longer_on_google/

Is it just me or is all of Eve Uni’s wiki no longer on Google? Previously you could Google the name of a combat site and it would pop up first result on Google. Now you have to actually search the website instead and none of eve university pages are ever returned in searches. I wonder what happened

Yeah we know and it’s super annoying. We’ve checked the indexing etc and there’s no issues there (and we haven’t changed anything, so it would be weird if there were).

Google is just deciding to not prioritise our wiki at the moment. We’re looking in to what we can do.

Some say it might be because they don’t run google ads, others speculate it might be a technical reason of sorts from several possibilities, while it is also possible the google AI / search algorithm was just messed up for some reason or who knows what else or a combination of things.

It is telling that according to the comments it is only an issue on google but no other search engine.

What’s certain that this is an unfortunate situation for anyone looking for information regarding EVE and especially for newbros.

Wikia pages that haven’t been updated since 2007 are showing up, but not the Uniwiki. It’s certainly a bizarre situation.

Yes that was also noted in the comments. Some said in relation to that the same thing that wikia has google ads while uniwiki doesn’t and this might be the reason.

Solution is simple: don’t use Google. Go straight to Eve Uni Wiki.

While on a surface level true it is short sighted missing the point considering newbros might not yet be aware of the uniwiki’s existence and even established players might not be aware of this specific new issue yet thus out of habit search as usual as in the past it worked without issue.

Both can figure it out eventually. Either way it is a problem nevertheless.

Not even with “EVE University” in the search request, it finds the page. I have to include “EVE university” in quotes to make Google find the wiki. Fascinating. DDG finds it just fine.

That’s a horribly wasteful and annoying suggestion. IF you can’t find something on a wiki/page, you wasted time searching for it on that page. Using a proper search engine that yields the directly wanted results as well as many other results on other pages saves time, effort and frustration.

The google engine isnt as good as it used to be imo.

Just use another engine….duckduckgo , bing, and others work just fine.

I haven’t used google in over 10 years. Not once. Yet another reason to never go back to it. Duckduckgo is the best search engine as far as I’m concerned.

I just typed eve uni in firefox. came up no problem.

The problem started appearing after the redesign of EVE Uni Wiki. There is a checklist of things to do when such a major change happens to a site in order to preserve Google rankings. Maybe admins simply forgot about something from that list, it happens.

All the more reason to revert the changes then. The old version was better in every respect.
