So I first tried EVE back in 2018 and couldn’t get into it, just didn’t gel with me and felt directionless.
Got back into it a month ago and initially loved it - the AIR programme makes learning the ropes of the game much easier and provides a way of testing out all the careers.
However - I’ve hit a wall. To progress you have to join a corp. Corps all organise themselves on Discord.
I don’t mind group chats with people I know IRL but I really don’t like chatting with people I don’t know on Discord, I don’t want to be constantly pinged about a video game when I’m not playing said video game.
If all the corp communications was in game it would be fine but this is where I hit my limit. Maybe if Incarna had been done right that would have been the main way to communicate in game, maybe if something like that comes back in future I’ll come back but until then I’m out
discord notification settings… just turn off all pings and read the stuff you want to read manually.
You’ll miss some infos that may be somewhat important for your group tho… don’t complain later if you want to dock at a station where all your stuff is and it has been blown up while you didn’t care to read the alert message that told you to evacuate all your stuff…
Also there are casual groups that literally demand nothing, you can show up whenever you want and do your own stuff entirely if you want. All you probably have to accept is a slight tax, which is the payment for whatever content or infrstructure they offer. Make sure this is in balance.
The whole point of a discord is that you can distribute information outside of the game. If you can only communicate inside the game you’ll only reach those who are on a character in the corp at that time, with discord you can also reach alts and people who may be playing something else or just browsing the internet or something, and may still want to join.
Anyway, you can right-click the discord channel and click mute for 24 hours or whatever. I’ve yet to find a corp that demands 24/7 attendance, and if such a thing exists you should leave it anyway because that’s absurd. You can also mute individual sub-channels, for example I’m interested in calls to action, but not at all in memes or general discussion, so I just keep those sub-channels on permanent mute.
Incarna could have been the coolest thing ever and it would still have only been used by a handful of roleplayers. Chatting in channels is just so much more convenient, fitting and undocking is much quicker when you don’t have to walk across an apartment to do it, etc.
And how is this the fault of the game exactly? I would guess this would happen in other group played games also? So either find a corp without Discord or tune your Discord to your liking? Or just close Discord when not playing the game - how hard can it be?
And if you have to be in a corp “to progress” is also debatable. When i was young i was in a corp, then in an alliance, then built a station and everything. Grew tired of all the responsibilities altogether and now play only for myself. Much more relaxing. Maybe for learning you need to be in a corp, but not mandatory to enjoy the game. It just depends on yourself on how the requirements are.
Im not in a corp per se, as much as helping run a service. I jump on discord when I feel like it, as that is our “front office” notifications are turned off, even the “boss” has them turned off as theres two ways to ping them. But we interact with discord when it suits us. And we dont even use voice chat
Yeah I can see why you’re not keen on joining a discord server, you seem to have a talent for really quickly making tons of friends with posts like this.
You don’t have to join a corp, but there is a huge learning curve in this game. Either you ask questions in Reddit or in the forums, or you ask them in a corp (and read a lot on Google!). You have to learn it somewhere though. It’s so much easier to learn it in a corp.
Create a second discord account, JUST for this situation. So you have an account for games where you’re fine to be “harassed” for your attention, and an account where you just want to chill and be with friends and/or away from that or those games..
I dont chat on discord like i used to. But, its a very important tool for me for getting info with this and all the other games i play. I still chat through texts on discord a lot with an occasional voice chat…but not very often does that happen. Ive also properly adjusted it so i dont get all the rubbish notifications….just the important stuff. I currently have 23 discord channels that i use regularly to keep up with stuff going on in the gaming world.
I honestly dont know how i would even act without discord….its a must.
Though it is strongly recommended for most people, you don’t “have” to join an org. Furthermore, “progress” in Eve is also basically going to be defined by whatever your personal goals are and whether or not you’re moving toward them. There are plenty of ways to accomplish things solo, though it is certainly playing on hard-mode.
As Namdor said, progression is about being self-directed to whatever goal you set. Plenty of players make their own corp simply because their goals don’t align with others for whatever reason. Or they’re sick of paying tax. Or both.
You absolutely do not need any third party tools to enjoy the game. You can log in and play Eve Online. If that isn’t fun, making a chore out of it probably won’t help. Lots of good space games out there.
Honestly, it doesn’t sound like MMOs are for you. And… that’s fine! Not every gamer has to like the same game. If you don’t like joining corps, the only thing I can really suggest is running level 4 missions and watching things explode which can be pretty on max graphics.
Actually I have a friend who plays the game and doesn’t join corps because while he doesn’t mind chatting with voice over IP, he hates Discord with a passion (actually I hate it too, I just tolerate it) so he spends his days solo running level 4 security missions. His goal is an Orca and go into solo Orca mining, but he doesn’t want to start until he gets enough to afford both the orca and 40 months of PLEX (so… that’s gonna be awhile ha ha ha).
Actually I’m just wondering are solo players even worth anything to CCP? Let’s say my friend subbed the whole year instead of 3 months a year and PLEXing the rest of his days. I mean obviously solo alpha players don’t make them money, so let’s assume he subscribed the whole year. But he doesn’t really interact with the rest of players and he can’t draw in other people into the game. Do they lose anything if FPS games go from the dominant form of video game to the only form and he never returns?
