The once sleepy Syndicate region has been pushed into the galactic spotlight after alleged involvement of the Intaki Syndicate organization in the recent tragedy with the sabotage of stargates leading into the Jita system. Once merely under the protection of the Caldari State, the Intaki Syndicate has been facing a brutal crackdown of its personnel and high ranking officials. All systems making up the region are under Caldari jurisdiction and stations within the region are under pressure to fold to the corporate goliath.
The Intaki Syndicate has always been a curious entity. Not criminal enough to be considered in the same league as organizations like the Guristas or Angel Cartel, but shady enough to warrant immense distrust and ire from residents of lawful society. The latter here leading to much apathy to what comes of the Syndicate as the State asserts its dominance over the region and attempts to decapitate the leadership to see the organization dissolved. The passion the State government has to see this done exceeds past internal affairs as the Navy openly place a bounty on marked Syndicate ships fleeing their region for shelter in Federal space.A move made possible by the Moreau administration offer of amnesty to descendants of the original exiles that left Intaki Prime generations back.
The Intaki diaspora is a strong one however, Despite Intaki heritage being more local to the borders of the Federation, they have managed to spread their bloodline across the stars, The Syndicate being no different as another extension of a people with rich history and traditions. Brothers and sisters separated by legislation. As of today, two nations prop themselves up on separate ends of the future of the Intaki diaspora, And in search of Insight in the middle, we get ahold of a legendary figure. Leader of the Intaki Liberation Front, Bataav
[Kalto]
"I’m Kalto Moxin, and today I’m at the Intaki Cultural Centre on Intaki Prime, and sitting across from me right now, the Suresha of The venerable Intaki Liberation Front, Bataav! Its good to see you again, thank you for agreeing to speak with Insight… Starting us off, how about you tell me more about this location and its significance? I was here for my ZANIE run years back, but tell the readers of Insight what this place is. It’s more than a museum of Intaki heritage, but also a campus for enlightenment. Think that was a student of some shade that just left the room as we entered…?
[Bataav]
“Namas. It’s a pleasure to welcome you back to the Intaki Cultural Centre. The oldest structures here are an old Idic monastery, but the newer structures were added by the Intaki Liberation Front in more recent years. Originally it provided us with a space for us to curate a range of culturally significant artifacts and texts for the people of Intaki. But as our membership grew, and were eager to learn more about the history and people of Intaki, and our cause in general, we realised that the Centre would serve well as a place of contemplation, debate and learning. So we chose to open it to the public to do just that. Our supporters volunteered to staff the facilities, and those who were best placed to lead Idic study, or chair debates on a range of topics, offered to do so. And yes, that was Rawan, one of our volunteers. He does study here, but he’s exploring Adakul rather than Ida. The Intaki LIberation Front also maintains a suite of offices and other facilities here. It is where many of our members and supporters take the first step on their path with us, and so it holds a place of personal significance for many. In later years, when we first ran the Intaki Prime Relief Effort as an ILF initiative, some of the larger spaces at the centre were given over to storage for humanitarian supplies, but that organisation is now a registered corporation in their own right, with their own purpose built facilities. I’m sure Rawan or one of the others would be happy to give a short guided tour of the public areas after our conversation, if you have time.”
[Kalto]
"Yes - If we have the time - Is key here as we got plenty to unpack… As I see around me, and hear in your words, the Intaki people are a proud one. And no matter the struggle and turmoil, Intaki culture and society persists… So that brings me to the topic at hand. The Intaki system is under extensive Federal military oversight, an Intaki president is in office again and the Caldari have annexed the entirety of the Syndicate region… So to ask you directly, where’s your head right now on this rollercoaster of emotion?”
[Bataav]
“The ongoing Navy deployments here continues to be a serious concern for many in Intaki, but the events in Syndicate space have captured everyone’s attention, so I’ll address that first. The State’s arrest of Silphy en Diabel and annexation of Syndicate space, the attempted breakouts by Syndicate fleets, and en Diabel’s later escape are all significant pieces of a fast moving crisis. The Intaki Liberation Front’s official position has evolved over time, with former leadership being critical towards the Syndicate, but I have always regarded them in a more favorable light, and have sought to build bridges where I can. Therefore I have found recent events to be very difficult, and have directed our people to offer humanitarian and tactical support where possible. We are also exploring the option of accepting some Syndicate expats into our affiliated organizations where appropriate, and we’re lobbying the Intaki Assembly and other local representatives to do the same across Viriette. Which brings us back to Intaki, and the Federation Navy. Our initial hope had been that Chief Councillor Ivestara and the Intaki Autonomists at the Assembly, and President Moreau, would be the path to positive change in Intaki in this regard, but attention has clearly been pulled elsewhere. We fully intend to bring the spotlight back to the security situation in Intaki, and our strategic analysts are exploring some radical opportunities that have been raised following the State’s annexation of Syndicate. This is a longer running issue though, and I believe we have more time to spend on making a coherent argument for the Navy’s redeployment out of Intaki as soon as possible.”
[Kalto]
“Let’s talk about what the Syndicate is to the Intaki diaspora… Has it stood as a black mark on the Intaki legacy or are they viewed as misunderstood kin forced to make due on the fringes?”
[Bataav]
“The Syndicate is interesting… obviously they have Intaki roots, and there will be many who can trace their heritage to the so-called 5,000, but in the time since the Exile, countless more have migrated to Syndicate space. From all across New Eden. The Syndicate have never released demographic data, but through our limited experience working with them, it seems that a lot of Matari migrants, who for one reason or another did not stay in the Federation, have found themselves in Syndicate. They probably account for a large percentage of the population. And yes, some people tarnish all Syndicate with the same brush depending on what they have read in the news, or what they think they know. This is no different to any one group’s opinion towards another.”
[Kalto]
“And without beating around the bush… By all standards the Intaki Syndicate are a criminal enterprise, yes? This has been the silent narrative for years but now with the State annexation, that has been made the frontmost concern. That this is a dishonorable criminal organization and the State is dismantling it piece-by-piece… This goes beyond the alleged gate, the Syndicate have had their hands in all manner of illicit activities for years now. Specifically, with their historic ties with the Serpentis Corporation… To a good portion of New Eden, this is just seen as any of the pirate factions having their holdings stamped out and less organized crime in the cluster… What say you?”
[Bataav]
“It’s true that elements of the Syndicate have broken the laws of the central four empires. There’s no question. They have dealt in products and services that are prohibited. It doesn’t absolve those Syndicate groups of their guilt, but members of the central four empires, quite often people of influence and responsibility, have turned a blind eye and taken advantage of those products and services when it has been convenient. The Syndicate may try to justify any dealings with Serpentis as simply business, but this has always been a serious concern for us. However, I do not believe the two are intrinsically linked. I think the founding of Upwell and the circumstances around ORE joining go some way to illustrate that fact.”
[Kalto]
“Are you of the belief that we should be alarmed at what the State has planned for the region? Official sources declare a straight forward decapitation of the criminal elements of the syndicate and the uh… “Citizens” of the region will merely be incorporated into the Caldari lifestyle… Afterall, the Syndicate was formed by Caldari sympathizers, and with the Annexation comes the opportunity to maybe start colonizing worlds without fear of Federal retaliation.”
[Bataav]
“Well it’s not entirely true that the Exiled were Caldari sympathizers. More that they were against the war generally. Those who sided with the Caldari were more likely to join what became Mordu’s Legion. I’d say I’m more concerned than alarmed. But I am very concerned. I have direct experiences with the State, both in my youth, but more recently in Intaki, so I have some idea of what the Syndicate citizens can expect, at least to some degree. I’m not sure we can assume State citizenship is just going to be offered freely. Not without a catch. The Intaki experience is perhaps something of an unusual case though, as the Assembly always retained its sovereignty throughout, and Ishukone in particular operated as a good franchisee. More recently Lai Dai caused problems, and so I think what happens in Syndicate is going to depend a lot on which part of the State they end up interacting with.”
[Kalto]
"What can you tell me about these direct experiences you’re alluding to? How much of your youth would you be comfortable disclosing?”
[Bataav]
"Ah. The origin story? It’s not something I’ve ever spoken about publicly.”
~[Bataav smiles wryly at me, pausing as if considering how much to share, or whether to continue at all, before speaking again suddenly.]~
“My mother was Intaki but my father was not. He was… Deteis. Disassociated, so not a citizen of the State as such, but that would have mattered little to the ILF’s opponents who already accused us of being Caldari sympathizers, and so I never spoke about it. More recently I’ve started to, so I’m comfortable to share a little here. I grew up in an enclave on a station of one of the State’s megacorps in Verge Vendor. Opportunity was limited, and at the time I’d sought citizenship by means of military service. The mega’s own security arm was off limits to someone like me though, so my only option was a firm that operated on the fringes and offered plausible deniability if something went wrong. That’s what I imagine is in store for a lot of Syndicate citizens. Particularly those who resist what the State tries to impose upon them. I can see a lot of them being treated as little more than disassociated, and that doesn’t bode well at all.”
[Kalto]
“So the impression I’m getting is that the State isn’t as pro-Intaki as they make themselves out to be… If I may be frank, It’s disturbingly apparent to me that the Intaki diaspora for generations have been trapped between a rock and a hard place… While we could rag on the State Ia all day, we also need to look back home to the complete Federal occupation of the Intaki home system… Two nations who act like they have “Ownership” of the Intaki people… So Is all this just… I don’t know the right word to use here… Suffocating?”
[Bataav]
“Those of us in the Intaki independence movement aren’t so naive as to know that, in general, the State does not have Intaki interests at heart. They of course prioritize their own interests. We’re also fully aware that some in the State would have seen an independent Intaki as a means to weaken the Federation as they saw it. We disagree that one must lead to the other. When Heth was in power, the State briefly appeared to attempt to claim the Intaki system as its own, but this was short lived, and the Assembly remained sovereign. Instead we benefited from having Ishukone being awarded the shipping franchise for a number of years, and the ILF was able to foster a positive and long-standing alliance with I-RED in particular. More recently it has been members of the Federation government that have claimed ownership of ‘the Intaki’, and the home system. It did not seem as though the Intaki were being valued as equal members of the Federation, but rather as a possession to be coveted and hoarded. The people of Intaki deserve better than this. Intaki constantly being fought over by both Federation and State, irrespective of the wishes of the people is tiresome. That this now seems to have extended to the Intaki Syndicate, and that neither side seems capable of doing otherwise only makes our argument for us.”
[Kalto]
“Understood… Now we’ve taken up enough time so to wrap things up here I wanna hit you with one last question so we can have it addressed. The Syndicate breakout fleets… What is the official stance of the ILF on those tragedies? I need not blabber about what happened… But what of the Caldari’s bounty, The Federation’s Handling of the crisis, and the people who were piloting those capital ships fleeing into Federal borders.”
[Bataav]
"We welcomed President Moreau’s offer of amnesty, though we wish it had been made more widely, and it is disappointing that sanctuary has not been offered to any other citizens that attempt to make it to Federation space. Hopefully that will change. We considered the State’s bounties as distasteful. While we would have still opposed it, committing State assets to their effort would have at least been more honourable than paying blood money to any Capsuleer that was willing to engage with few questions asked.
We do have some positive news however. Through our own networks, the Intaki Liberation Front and our supporters have managed to secure the remains of 15 of the 18 Syndicate captains who were lost with their ships. The State will not have them, and instead we have reached out to the offices of President Moreau, Chief Councillor Ivestara, and Siaka Idama, so that the authorities may organize something respectful, and we’re currently awaiting a response."
[Kalto]
“May the deceased Captains and their crew rest in peace, condolences to the families for what they’re worth… Suresha Bataav, It has been an honor. Thank you very much for being Insight’s first Capsuleer Interviewee. This has been an enriching visit and I wish the best for you and your people… Now I’d like to make this a returning tradition, but for closing remarks I like to open the floor up for you to get anything you want off your chest about… Whatever really. Like anything we failed to touch on here but you want out there for the people to hear… If not? By all means, thank you for your time!”
[Bataav]
“It has been my pleasure. And I would end on a couple of points, as I feel as though we in the Intaki Liberation Front are often misunderstood, and we’re often disregarded as a local curiosity, or a minority movement with little traction. But I’d remind people that the current government of the Intaki Assembly won on a pro-Autonomy ticket. The Federation has a history of taking the people of Intaki for granted. Neglect has historically been exchanged for oppression when voices are raised in protest, but now the Autonomists have reached the President’s office, and now is a time for aspiration and change. We must look to the situation across the border in Syndicate and seek out the paths that lay before us. Who are we able to help directly? Who are we able to bring into the fold closer to home? What assets, experience and lessons can benefit Intaki, Viriette and beyond? As the State burns bridges in Syndicate, we in the Intaki Liberation Front seek to reach out and build upon the bonds we have already built, for the benefit of all people of Intaki.”
[Kalto]
"You heard it here first! From The Cultural Centre on Intaki Prime! This has been Kalto Moxin and Suresha Bataav! Stay tuned, New Eden!”
