Signed up yesterday, noticed today there was a nice buddy invite system that could get me a lot of skill points. Is there a grace period where you can add someones referral code or would I have to scrap my current account and progress and start over?
You have to start over but if you’re only one day in the 1,000,000 free skill points will make it more than worth the minor setback.

Unfortunately there is no way to retroactively add the code to an already existing account. You can try to contact CcP support though, they may make an exception.
