ISD Appreciation - On Behalf of the Community, Thank You!

How good are you at herding cats?

Unless the forums in some way harms the perception of eve from newcomers, in which case, one might consider if it is worth to even have. Other games have shut down their forums, cause of being too toxic. So it’s not that novel of a notion.

Otherwise, the people “discussing” in here are already lost causes. Let them have their playground.

There is never going to be a scenario, where the discussion in here is going to be “civilized”. The world of eve involves personal losses, which in turn fuel ones emotions. Emotions were never the best foundation for calm and civil discourse.

So very true.

naw…before CSM the likes of BoB , IRON , ASCN could come to a venue to talk. This idea that eve is full of jerks is realtively new. Its full of wonderful people whose ideas are smothered by jerks.

Some people pvp, some people mine. I guess I fight for the idea. I think we move forward from this mess of Eve now with discussion and communication. I hold out hope that its not all about the mighty irl dollar.

In order for us to move out of this current era of negativity we need a culture change…more of a reversion, to an era where people with different ideas could discourse without character attack.

Suggesting the new player is getting a real taste of the actual eve by allowing the insults to fly is , again, a cop out, to what is more difficult - which is communicating ideas.

there is no place or room for the acceptance of personal insults on EVe-o public forums.

That may well be so, I’m all for an intelligent discussion but unfortunately some are incapable of any form of rational debate and they are the ones that reduce us to insulting them.

I ain’t proud of it, but it is what it is.

the smaller the list of people hurling insults the faster and easier the job of the ISD. The more we grind up ideas and beat them to death the more data CCP should have [ if they’re watching properly]. Let’s give the gift of information.

And therein lies the problem, some of the ideas posted are dead horse topics that have been going on since beta, people are sick to the teeth of seeing them.

Eve forums have been famously tough for a long, long time. I was pummeled here back in 2008 for complain about something small and I learnt a very valuable lesson that day…do your/some research before posting nonsense. It was a rude awakening BUT what was said/yelled at me was 100% the truth and I was impressed by passion, knowledge and tenacity…

Eve itself is famous for being an incredibly ruff game due to its very nature…and that’s what makes it great.

People have the freedom to express whatever they want. One could equally say “Don’t begin such threads in the first place” or “Just use the forums mute function”.

This whole “don’t post in the threads if you have nothing nice to say”, is just a small example of these two fronts entrenched in their beliefs, where they are just locked in a stalemate.

The quality of discussion is not going to improve until this is solved. However, this is never going to be solved, cause this is a random forum for a digital game. This is not some academic forum where everything needs to be referenced to some credible source. Sure, we could make it as such, but then we would never see a post again.

So just accept that this is what we got and learn to live with it.

Obviously, still ban stuff like spammers and other clear offenders.

That’s where my small exchange with Rekindle showed, that what’s perceived as “abusive” seems to be rather subjective.

It’s a difference in definitions. This discussion isn’t going to progress any further. Just as I’ve noted above.

Most of the discussions in here are about definitions. Which in turn, makes the debates quite pointless, since there’s not even an agreement on the context of the discussion to begin with.

Which is why I say, just keep this as a playground for people to spend their Mondays on and take the discourse with a grain of salt.

Absolutely not, these forums are ‘meant’ to be the official face of CCP/Eve - not sure they or ISD realise that, but it is - because it’s official… leave the crap in reddit where it belongs…

It is rather odd how CCP use reddit, and respond to reddit posts, more than their own official forums… maybe they should just shut these down like they have been doing with almost everything else

I’ve also expressed support for shutting them down.

Like I’ve said before, nothing of value is going to be lost.

Got to say I agree… but maybe that’s the objective

Still want to know why ISD seem to think some people should not be held to account/expected to follow forums rules though…

I think that is the answer…that they either don’t overly care and/or don’t feel that their rules have been broken (on those you think have).

The lack of transparency doesn’t help - as mentioned above, definitions are an issue, but if ISD/CCP won’t offer any, or else just make them up as they go along, or appear to be applying them unequally - then well, lets just close it all down…

ISD do a great job. I even applied once, but I’m too naughty. My words not theirs.

Look its not rocket science and not overly complicated. Let’s come here to discuss ideas. Go to other places if you want to attack the person.

Eve once had a professionalism to it which only requires us to stay on topic to see rekindled.

May I ask when that was?
