So back in the first days of EVE the Devs used Jove character models.
They changed their models some time ago to one of the empires (Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar). I guess due to the Jove models looking ugly or something.
Now if I remember correctly, there were also some Jove NPC’s in K-Space. I may be wrong because it was a very long time ago and my memory doesn’t last that long,
Anyway, the Jove empire corporations have no Jove models since the update of character models to what we have now. I forget when it was introduced. Basically, it seems like the whole Jove models weren’t updated - so the below is a way for devs to ignore anything “Jove-related”. Even the ship models are no longer in EVE. Devs no longer fly them from what I know.
Has the whole Jove lore thing been brushed aside? Put on the backburner. The whole “Jove Disease” thing just a way to basically stop the whole Jove Empire lore?
Like, has it been abandonded?
The Society of Conscious Thought (SoCT) is basically a Jovian Corp and their ships, the Apotheosis (Shuttle), Metamorphosis (Frigate), Sunesis (Destroyer), Gnosis (Battlecruiser) and Praxis (Battleship) are Jovian-designed ships…
But yeah, long time ago back in the day CCP Devs LARP’d as Jovian’s during in-game Events… However since then the Events have become scripted and AI basically runs the Events now…
I think the most recent Jovian storyline plot is they’ve been cut off from the rest of New Eden due to their Jumpgate system going off-line… Then possibly because of Drifter activity, their hidden Observatories that were scattered throughout New Eden also went off-line and decloaked…
Lastly, information hacked from those Observatories was used to locate four hidden Jovian Gates that lead to Zarzakh system… That system has a Jovian megastructure station called ‘The Fulcrum’ which is under the control of the Deathless Circle…
Which basically introduced the Deathless story plot… So yeah, unfortunately the Jove are pretty much sitting on the back-burner now…
Last reports puts the Jovains at less than 100 individuals in the entire cluster, in a sea of trillions of humans. The 3rd Jovain Empire is no more. We have effectively lost contract with them with the Caroline Star event. Drifters and sleepers are likely remnants of the 1st and 2nd Jovian Empire and are the continuance of the Jovian story. https://universe.eveonline.com/chronicles/inheritance
As pointed out above, Jovian Directorate (so called 3rd Empire) no longer exists - in fact it only barely existed by the time the game launched in 2003.
My interpretation of the Inheritance chronicle is that some are still around in case the writing team ever needs to break out a Deus Ex Jove plot rescue, but the Third Empire Jove that occasionally showed up in the early days of the game are basically entirely written out of active lore.
Drifters are either remnants of Second Empire Jove, or artificial intelligences driving around meat puppets based on Sleepers (a very old, one could argue the original Jovian faction).
The SOCT was founded by a jovian and was kind of a jovian illuminati, then they were discovered and more or less expelled from jove space. The current members are all normal humans, as far as we are aware, the jovians having given up on life some time ago. This is detailed in the chronicle Inheritance.
Yes, but there is a lore explanation, again outlined in Inheritance. The jovians had been experimenting with a talocan static gate network, kind of like wormhole-based stargates, and when Caroline’s star went supernova, the effect propagated through their gates and destroyed the lot of them. The same nova, caused by some sort of quantum-entangled effect inherent to isogen-5, led to all the unstable wormholes we can scan down to go to anoikis.
Sleepers and Sleeper Drones aren’t necessarily the same thing. Sleepers are an ancient jovian faction that basically live(d) in the Matrix. They fled into anoikis during one of the many jovian civil wars, and were just enjoying their slowly deteriorating virtual world until the Amarr showed up and started ripping implants out of their plugged-in bodies to make the Dust 514 soldiers. It wasn’t long before all the empires were harvesting sleeper “corpses” and their virtual world suffered a cascading failure. They’re still alive, but we have reason to believe they are being tortured en masse by the Drifters, who may be AIs from the sleeper virtual world that ended up taking it over and escaping into the real world to cause mischief.
I’m talking about EVE Tech mostly. Not lore per-se.
So basically, how the Jove empire has normal human NPC’s as CEO’s.
Also, such like the stargates going down due to a player exploring Jove (dev) space.
The SOCT has normal humans as CEOs and lore characters because all the jovians either left or died. The SOCT has a lot of jove tech, but they aren’t themselves jovian.
Unfortunately CCP doesn’t love their own legacy and scratched it out of game. Earlier you could easily find the Jovian’s ships models @ Tranquility server but they removed them without any reason. So you could only find those at evewiki, YT and old players saved fits. Prety much strange actions to me.
Do you ever think the Jove will be brought back to Lore, or every expanded upon?
As right now, it’s gone. Forgotten.
Now if I remember correctly, there were also some Jove NPC’s in K-Space. I may be wrong because it was a very long time ago and my memory doesn’t last that long.
Also, adding to that bit, NPC haulers in high sec were a thing.
Just like Drifters, Sleeper, Seekers. They’ve been introduced but nothing new since introduction.
Yeah, you’re talking about the Hauler Convoys that would travel between stations… I hunted those for a while, they mainly dropped trade goods and minerals… If I remember correctly, in order to not be shot by station guns, you had to catch them in-bound to a different station not affiliated with their corp…
Anyway, those Haulers were basically integrated into the NPC Mining Fleets… So instead of having 4 or 5 Haulers going in-between stations, now there’s 1 or 2 Haulers transporting Ore to stations for the NPC Mining Fleets and when attacked, they warp away while an NPC Battle Defense group warps in to attack you…
There were less than 100, 10 years ago. There are likely less due to the Jovian disease.
We’ve been dealing with the fallout of former Jovian Empire(s). Drifters/Sleepers are an offshoot of the 2nd Jovian Empire, The Trig knew the Jovians before they were trapped in the Abyss. Zarzakh is a remnant of the Jove, eventually we may get access to Jove space, but I would not count on it being anytime soon, and it may just be barren after the W477-P super-supernova.
Correction; The chronicle says “Less than a hundred remained loyal to the ideal of passing on what we could if the supernova and the inevitable quantum-level events left anything intact.” It does not mean, or at least I didn’t take it to mean that less than a hundred Jove remained, but less than a hundred still carrying on the ideal of the former Empire that remained as “a rear guard.” It does say around thousand still existed, just scattered all over the remnants of the empire or escaped enigmatically “far away”.
Granted, I recall the writer of the chronicle saying that Veniel is not a reliable narrator, so there could be even less Jove around.. Or even more, just cut off from each other. I mean, imagine that whatever country you’re in, suddenly only a thousand people remained. You likely wouldn’t see or hear from anyone for days to months, years even. Now imagine that on an interstellar scale.
Which brings me to:
I very much doubt it, but I wouldn’t 100% rule it out. As I said earlier, I think they were written out in a way that some Jove characters could be brought back to the story if needed, but given that (and I don’t intend disrespect) the new lore staff aren’t to my knowledge very familiar with the long history of the game, the original Jove are either something they have no idea how to tackle, nor possibly have interest or resources to write about.
Like, never say never, but seeing that in the last 10 years we have gotten a total of 7 chronicles, and it’s now close to 2 years since the last one, and six years between that and the previous ones, any lore expansion of any kind seems kinda wishful thinking to expect.
Of course I really hope I’m proven wrong and we get a hundred new chronicles dumped on us tomorrow.
