Well, the Jovians were all coming from the same genetic stock, and for a long time that worked fine, so I doubt it was something like this, but rather just that DNA doesn’t last forever and eventually degradation set in that screwed them over. All of them made after a certain point already had the defect and it was only a matter of time until it manifested.

Not really, The root is probably in the Second Jovian Empire, It didn’t really come out until the 3rd. They had a history of refining their bloodlines. Probably with similar technology to CRISPR.

Similar in concept but more capable more likely, remember EVE is set sufficiently far into the future for humanity in the cluster to have gone back to square 1 and reached interstellar civilization levels again. The Jove had it easier so they had a lot of time to work on their gene editing tech. I find it unlikely that something they executed flawlessly for millenia all of a sudden had the precision of a fly swatter and caused unintended modifications to areas they weren’t trying to modify.

Depending on how you read it the Jovians that survived the Second Empire cam out of the Shrouded Days and it was only then that it became a real issue. It seems to have been related to other conditions in the past. It infers that they re-cloned at that point. So it could have been a flaw in their genome base or something.
