We all play in the same universe, but we speak different languages. Russians, Chinese, Germans, French, English speakers — we fly together, trade, fight, but often can’t even have a simple conversation.
Because of this, we are losing:
Potential allies. You found a great corporation, but their leader only speaks English, and you just can’t understand each other.
New players.Someone starts the game, doesn’t know the language, is afraid to join public chat or a large alliance, and eventually quits.
Interesting deals. It’s hard to negotiate a price or logistics when you’re communicating through Google Translate open on a second screen.
The very idea of a single world.EVE Onlineshould be a place where everyone can communicate, no matter where they’re from.
What I am proposing:
Add an optional “Translate Message” button in the game. You click it, and instead of gibberish, you see the text in your own language. Or, if you want everyone to understand you, you type in Russian, and the game automatically translates your message into your conversation partner’s language.
This could work just like the translation feature in Discord or modern messengers: subtle, convenient, and only active when you need it.
Why do we, regular players, need this?
It will become easier to find friends in other countries and unite our corporations.
New players will stop being afraid and will actively join the community.
Diplomacy and trade between alliances will no longer be a “ritual dance with a tambourine.”
The number of grievances and conflicts that happen simply because someone misunderstood someone else will decrease.
What I suggest doing right now:
If you have ever faced inconvenience in the game due to a language barrier, please support this idea.
Write +1 or just “I support” in the comments.
Share this topic with your corp-mates, alliance, and friends in the game. The more of us there are, the higher the chance that CCP will listen.
We are not asking for anything extraordinary. We just want to be able to talk to each other in EVE in a language we understand.
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. I listened to your comment and translated my proposal, you can see it above. But here’s a question for you: you felt uncomfortable seeing a message in a foreign language, right? That’s exactly my point. On any website or forum you can translate text with one click - there are built-in tools, browser extensions, or you can just copy and paste into Google Translate. In EVE Online? There’s no such option. At all. If you want to understand someone who speaks another language, you have to alt-tab out of the game, open a translator, paste the text, and then hope you copied it right. And if you’re in a fast-moving fleet or trying to negotiate a trade? Good luck with that. That’s all I’m asking for - the same one-click convenience that already exists everywhere else, but inside the game. Thanks for understanding.
no.. Russia has its own language forum. Primary language on the forums is English, and it is in the forum rules to use English.
Please use the correct language when posting.
The default language for posting on the EVE Online forums is English. Please use English when posting as a courtesy to other forum users, unless the forum channel is specifically created for discussion in another language as part of our localized language specific sub-forums.
One question: did the language of my post change on your end? I rewrote the topic in English, but maybe it didn’t display correctly on your side. Because I can see that the text of the topic is translated according to the rules.
I second this suggestion. I’m Russian, I speak good English and decent German and French, which let me communicate with most other players for a long time. Then the Chinese arrived, and I got a new perspective on the language barrier many other players are having to deal with. It’s common for Germans or French to have good English, and most Russians here know enough English to get by, but very few non-Chinese will understand the Chinese, and likewise many Chinese have only very little English. An in-game chat translator, for example just a little checkbox that will translate that message to your client’s chosen language, would do a lot of good for everyone.
I do think making it something you toggle for each message (or individual languages) rather than something that is either always on or always off is vital though. My clients are set to English, and I never want English, German, French, or Russian machine translated, but I do want Chinese, Korean, and Spanish translated, for example.
Exactly! I want all players to communicate freely without a language barrier. I get that adding code to a 20+ year old game with spaghetti code is impossible, and the CCP team has probably changed 40 times. Messing with that code is a huge risk for programmers. But I’m not suggesting we embed code into the game we can write a utility instead. So, thanks for your support.
There were Reasons why it was removed, and due to google translate and others is probably why ccp doesnt add an in game translator, much less god knows how long it would take to do that.
But 1st CCP has to remove their chat systems from 3rd party servers back in house…then do what ever tehy have to , to rework it so tehy can add such a ssystem
I’ve already started writing a utility in Python, because I understand that the developers are already having a hard time with the new locations for PvE — they have enough on their plate. I’ll be writing the code using the deep-translator library (free access to Google Translate) and tkinter for the graphical interface. So far, the languages include: Russian, English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, and of course Traditional Chinese. There will also be auto-detection of the language, as well as a frame. If everything works well, I’ll post something soon. I want to note that this utility will not affect the game in any way, nor will it interact with it — otherwise CCP might think I’m trying to somehow inject code through reverse engineering, which is not the case.
I’ve attached a test screenshot inside. So far, the utility looks like a regular translator, but I’ve visualized it for convenience. I’m also working on making an active button on top of EVE Online — I’m still thinking about how to implement that. So don’t be too harsh on me.
What do you think of the idea of a chat setting that lets you choose which language you want to receive messages in? If an incoming message doesn’t match that setting, it will be automatically translated and sent to the chat, with the option to view the original text, just like on Tube.
Greetings CASTOLE, already in the Closed Alpha Test, at your suggestion I added the “Load Chat” functionality to the utility, now you can enter the chat LOG into the translator for automatic translation there will be a hint where to find the Chat LOG. Documents/EVE/LOGS/Chatlogs but only one chat can be entered into the program. For now the program is raw and works through the google translator library.
