A cruise Golem is fine - and it will certainly get the job done. Missiles are just boring as sin (fire, count volleys, wait… repeat). You lose a lot of damage application against smaller ships and can quite easily lose a lot of DPS to lost volleys (something that’s not really an issue with guns).
My personal favorite is a blaster Kronos. 3.7s rof, hits out to 70km and damage is variable between 1200-1600 just by switching between Null and Void ammunition. 5-second reload and a 2-slot armor tank (which you can certainly augment if so desired).
To effectively armor tank the Kronos you only need 2 modules: a Deadspace large armor repairer and a reactive armor hardener. So the only 3 skills you really need are Hull Upgrades, Mechanics (both of which you’ll probably already have)) and Repair systems. Resistance Phasing is fine at anywhere between II-V and takes a minimal of time to train.
As indicated, a lot comes down to personal playing preference. With the Golem you do have to apply target painters often (so a lot of clicking), and actively count and track volleys to maximize DPS. I like gun platforms because it’s instant damage (hit or miss) and any active modules apply to your weapons (and not the target).
Edit: Here’s a link to a Kronos fit I posted in another thread.
