Medium shader = blocky cloak

Using NVIDIA card. When shader is on high the cloak looks normal, medium gives blocky white/grey translucent effect, not normal. I remember it wasn’t like this when I first started a few months ago. Is there a workaround or is this a bug? I saw an archived post from several years back that mentioned ships were disappearing but this isn’t the same.
