Just a thought on mining drones. Why not make them sentries? The time it takes for a mining drone to circle an average asteroid takes an incredible amount of time for them to return to the ship.
Where would they put the ore after each laser cycle? Would it be stored in a nearby container, as if the drone is jetcan mining? Would it automatically return the ore to you, and if so, how close would you have to be to the drone for that to happen? Seems like it would overcomplicate a system that is currently working well enough.
And if you want more speed out of your mining drones, make sure to fit a couple drone navigation computers.
