Noob combat question

Hi,
brand new pilot here. I have tried the tutorial but I don’t quite get how combat works. I understand that I need to lock on a target, and then click on my weapons to activate them. But how do I actually fire the weapon? Do I point at the target and click, or click on the weapon (again) to fire? How do I avoid accidentally deactivating my weapon? And how on earth do I get the web weapon to work?

Sorry if these are all very obvious, but all the guides online just stop at activation and assume that firing is self-explanatory…

Cheers,
Briene (MPAF)

Once you click F1 or the weapon itself it will fire missiles or lasers until target is destroyed or it runs out of ammo and reloads. To which you’ll need to restart it. To avoid accidentally deactivate it, dont double click when trying to activate.

Web has to be in a certain distance but same as weapon, just click to activate

You probably should play the tutorial again and then maybe begin with some of the first Agent Career missions that explain the absolute bascis of commandeering your ship.

Welcome to Eve, where the seemingly simple is anything but!

While the tutorial should have answered this question, your very first ship has essentially infinite ammunition (the civilian guns). As you start to pilot other ships during the Career Agent missions, the weapons you equip there will need to be loaded with the appropriate ammunition in order to fire. However, as long as they are loaded then locking and either pressing F1 (default for the first high [weapon] slot) or clicking the weapon will make it fire. As has been said it will then fire until the target is destroyed or it runs out of ammo.

The caveats: you must be in range for your weapons and, for anything that isn’t a missile, there is a chance that you’ll miss even within range.

The career agents are in the base that you will have started in, by default the window for them is on the right hand side of the screen; there will be a tab for ‘agents’ and they will be listed there. double click any of them to start that career path. Not all paths require you to shoot things btw!

Good luck and fly ‘safe’
