So, I’m not “new” per se, but I took 4 years off. I just loaded in, and I see that all of my millions of skill points in advanced (in 2017) skills are unusable unless I subscribe?
That seems… great 
Yep. At least you can play for free, but considering it’s always been a sub game, you should know that you have to be subbed to play. There are some skills and things you can do without subbing.

EVE is subscription game at not even two McDonald’s meals a month. I cut down to one Burger King’s meal a month and am feeling much better for it.
To me, EVE is worth at least that.
