Insurance in EVE is not a for-profit organization, it’s a social institution that softens the loss of (mainly T1) ships to help new and less fortunate capsuleers get their footing in New Eden while they explore not only HS but also wormhole space.
Insurers in EVE exists not to earn ISK, but to help us. They are sponsoring us for trillions, 5.1T paid out for 2.4T ISK insurance premies is a net 2.7T ISK paid out (and loss) for them last month:
If it was protecting new players fine but hundreds if not 1000’s of players insure ships like the Brutix to yeet them at other wormholes or null / low sec players.
Why should this be an acceptable loss making enterprise - I would argue it doesn’t make the game better but rewards stupidly and carelessness.
I am not proposing doing away with all insurance - I have no problem with insuring your ship if you are missioning in HS. But WH and Null feels ridiculous.
People buy a 140m ship, insure it for 20m get it killed 20 minutes later get 60m insurance. Insurance is never offered as a benefit- it’s a business like everything else.
The taxes pay for the services at whatever of their stations you are using, that’s why players put up their own. Just because it’s a non player character doesn’t mean it should act in a ridiculous manner - no player character would take on that role if it didn’t turn a profit.
Insurance is purely a game mechanic. It doesn’t have to make logical sense. The purpose of insurance is simple and specific: to soften the blow of a ship loss, thus encouraging players to take risks (i.e., create content for other players). If CCP only insured ship loss in hisec, all that would do is discourage players from exploring other parts of the game. This would be very bad for EVE. We already have too much risk aversion among the playerbase. We don’t need more.
