Ship roadmap for beginner

Hi everyone. I joined a small WH corp but I am a super newbie. I have trained Magic 14, basic navigation, cloaking, …

I haven’t specialized in anything else yet because I wanna understand what my options are. I know that everything depends and the more SP you have the broader my options will be. For now I only have 3m SP and also 9bn ISK from selling extractors.

I was kinda planning on buying a few Skill Injections to speed up the process slightly. Not because I plan on getting in anything shiny now though, just so I don’t have to wait months and months for some decent pvp skills.

I’m exploring in a Heron for learning now and I moved to my corp’s WH. They are teaching me a lot and I LOVE these people even outside of Eve so i feel really lucky to have found them.

I want to get into PvP small scale with them but outside of that I wanna start doing Faction Warfare on my own and learn to pvp well. I wanna learn how to use turrets too with Angular Velocity. I wanna eventually do cloaky solo pvp for fun and also with my besties (corp) together.

I make this thread not to get advice on ‘This ship is the best’ but rather, I’d like to learn about different ships and what they are good for (specifically ships for my goals i mentioned). Its okay to explain/add a bit about T3 Cruisers but since its probably far off its not my main interest at the moment.

Could you guys make a cool breakdown of ships that would be good and what they are good for? Mention things like ‘This ship with these type of turrets are really strong for Kiting because x’ for example.

Than i can learn a bit and research further in the skill tree by myself. The more ships explained the better!

I know things like Tackling, Logi, Dps, scrambling, scram kititing, … You can explain away even with difficult words as I’ll just look up what is what and learn even more <3

Oh, big question!

First I want to mention that there can never be a general answer. “The best ship” (outside of friendship) in Eve doesn’t exist. It all depends greatly on what use case you want it for.

A T3 Cruiser will for example not be great for learning in Faction Warfare.
The 2024 Frigate Yearbook by T Sky. is probably what you want to read instead.

For cloaky shenanigans, a Bomber (the more affordable option) or the Metamorphosis and Astero are good options to start with. Note that a Bomber that is hunting for explorers doesn’t need the skill to use torpedo launchers. Small guns are just fine, even with no hull bonus.

If you skip the cloak and go small-gang style, you can have a look at this series of posts that might have the explanations you may be looking for: Affordable Solo – the greybill

you totally didn’t read the OP..

they aren’t asking for this.

they want to know what ships are good for what?

@Nora_Maldoran this is what OP wants, not… This ship is best etc…

You can’t just ask your new super-dee-duper wormhole corp friends?

Let’s see what AI has determined to be best the roadmap.

Compiling…

AI compiled this roadmap, enjoy.

eve-online-ship-roadmap (2) - Jumpshare

348 pages of what you wanted to know about ships in Eve-Online.

Just skimming through: AI attributing shields to Amarr.

How can you trust this output to contain correct information if it already makes such obvious mistakes?
If you don’t also do a fact-check before posting, I don’t think this is helpful.

That’s the way AI wrote, must be some reason why.

Best advice we can really give is for you to set goals for yourself, for example:

  • PvE - Skill into a ship that can comfortably run Sleeper sites in your WH. Maybe one for soloing and one group.
  • PvP - Get a bunch of cheap Frigate/Destroyer/Cruiser size ships to practice with.

As for ship progression there really is no right or wrong answer. For PvE content the commonly used ships are

  • Vexor - Gallente - Drone/Armor Tank/Speed Tank Cruiser.
  • Ishtar - Gallente [T2 Variant of vexor] Sentry/Heavy Drone/Armor Tank Cruiser.
  • Gila - Gurista Faction Drone/Missile/Shield Tank Cruiser.
  • Drake - Caldari - Missile/Shield Tank BattleCruiser
  • Tengu - Caldari - Missile/Shield Tank Tech 3 Cruiser.
  • Raven - Caldari - Missile/Shield Tank Battleship
  • Rattlesnake - Gurista Faction Drone/Missile/Shield Tank Battleship.

Every use case for a ship is heavily dependant on the situation, many things factor into the decision for which ship to use - your Skills, the Activity, the Space you’re in, size of Group or Solo. The role/hull bonus of a ship does not define it’s only use case - in PvP sometimes the unexpected can make the difference in winning or losing an engagement.

In one of my recent PvP encounters I was mining in lowsec in my Endurance and got attacked by a Stealth Bomber. Knowing I could get attack at any time my Endurance was fitted accordingly and thus I was able to escape - perhaps I could have destroyed the attacker if we had kept up attacking each other but not having a scram/disruptor fitted would mean attacker could warp off any time he wanted and it wasn’t like I would have been able to kill him before he could make his getaway with only 2 light drones. So we both parted ways with a ‘gf’ in local

Like already suggested why not ask your Corp mates for help? they are far more likely to be helpful due to the fact they know the space where they live.

So Cloaking + Heron makes Covert Ops, in the Caldari world the Buzzard.

I’d also recommend expedition frigs: Prospect and Endurance.
