Just from my own experience as a casual player who has begun turning to the PVP side of this game casually:
I built up a ton of isk over a long period of time… “ton” is relative. To me that was about 3.5 billion isk. I did this through exploration, missions, investments, etc. Took me a couple months as a casual player (few missions per log-on; 1 log-on every few days).
I purchased a bunch of T1 hulls (all numbers are approx): 10 Kestrels, 10 Condors, 5 CN Hookbills, 10 Cormorants; I then purchased a few T2 hulls: 5-6 Hawks, 2 Harpies… I think that’s it. Then I purchased a Tengu, which I haven’t engaged yet but I plan to use it for something other than FW purposes. I also got a Drake fully fitted. I then bought all my modules to fit each ship. I went T2 for everything, including most rigs. I try to buy everything as cheap as possible. But when I really want something I utilise the local markets (I just had recent spat of failures testing out a kiting Kestrel that occurred to me during class one day that I just had to try out asap).
Anywho, I’ve been casually running FW for… I think about a month. Of course I’ve lost a ton of ships. But, all of that cost me about 1.5 billion isk; I’m down to about 1.8 bil. I don’t think I’ve lost a Condor yet b/c I’m not flying them. I’ve lost several Kestrels, a few cormorants and a couple Hookbills; lost 1 Hawk to a roaming gang (I brought one down with me!). I also had an awesome run the other day where I lost 4 Kessies to 1 guy because I kept thinking “ok, I did this wrong so I will do this other thing to correct…” well the guy’s a pro, but I learned a lot!
Most of my losses have been pilot error through the learning process. That learning process includes learning what to engage and what NOT to engage in which ship (probably the most important lesson if you want to keep your ships); when to engage; how to engage; how to use your own weapons; how to counter other weapons; how to reduce incoming DPS in ways other than defence modules; how to smell a trap; how to counter certain tactics; etc etc etc. I also had an overview friendly fire incident that I feel like an idiot about. The guy lost a cormorant but I decided to send him 100 mill plus an exact replica of his fitted cormorant. He never responded to my invitations for conversation, but if you’re reading this, I really am sorry and I’ve changed my overview (sec status background was set to override FW background…)
I’ve willingly made errors that have cost me ships in the name of learning, knowing that I would crash and burn (for a number of reasons) but wanting to at least try and learn something. I could attribute at least 6 losses to willing sacrifice.
I’ve probably gone through 1/3 or 1/2 of my ships, so I have potentially another month or two worth of ships to lose. I also intend on maybe picking my engagements better going forward, but also intend on venturing into more dangerous territory, so I can confidently say I’ve got 1 month of casual PVP left at the FW Frigate/Destroyer level.
So, 2-3 months, probably longer if I wasn’t so wreckless, for 1 billion isk, (I would ignore the Tengu and Drake purchases because I don’t know if I will use them yet). I can also confidently say that I could earn 1 billion isk in a dedicated weekend of PVE. There is also a mechanism within FW to build wealth, but I have not utilised this yet so I have no idea how much I can make there. So 1 weekend for 2-3 months of wreckless T2 fitted T1 hull PVP gameplay. That’s really not a bad deal OP. I do realise that you’re not complaining, and I respect that. But I wouldn’t say cost of PVP is a barrier to entry, prohibitive, or even expensive.
Granted, I am a casual player (about 6-10 engagements per week), but if I wanted to save isk and bump up my activity, I would probably tone down my wrecklessness and maybe learn how to convert my LP and time in FW into isk. I also probably engage in fights I shouldn’t because I want to maximise my engagements with my limited online time. So I think my numbers are still fair.
Food for thought anyways…
