Another thing we forgot to mention is how most of these ship classes are essentially rock-paper-scissors.
This is obviously a generalization but it would be something like: Slicer beats Hookbill, Hookbill beats Firetail, Firetail beats Slicer
And the Comet… beats them all I guess?
maybe I’m proving myself wrong here, but you get the idea.
I literally used to pop Comets in my arty Rifter, I must’ve gotten dozens of Comet kills in it when I used to fly it regularly. I even have old videos of it on Youtube. (This was before they changed the Rifter damage bonus to a Rate of Fire bonus - which was one of the stupidest changes in recent years because it was a nerf to Arty Rifters. They now do less alpha damage and run out of ammo quicker, and with an arty frigate you only get ten shots before you have to reload)
The main reason I was able to kill so many Comets in it is simply because MOST players fly the same braindead AB/scram/web setup with blasters or rails
Is it a good setup? Sure, but it really ignores the versatility and potential of the Comet IMO. It’s a ship that is capable of so much more than what most people use it for.

I can kill a light missile Hookbill even with my scram Comet that I punch in on you with. I have drones, railguns, and just so much tank. I’ll easily either force you off or annihilate you.
It’s completely situational derp boy
This mirrors my opinion on the state of pvp quite well, but only for low in-game skill pilots. High octane groups like Overclocker or other extremely skilled pilots get fantastic fights punching up against the blob in null or WH space. Wormhole hunting, nullsec ratter hunting or response baiting, it all depends on your playstyle. Heck, even Pochven has crazy fights! It all depends on where you look if you have the skills to fly advanced ships effectively.
That’s why I love arranged duels hahaha
I love that change. It’s really refocused the Rifter into the awesome autocannon brawler we love. That falloff bonus really makes it feel like the small Stabber it’s supposed to be.
Also, does “braindead setup” include a glass cannon rail Taranis? XD
The thing I also love about lowsec solo pvp is that it’s really not as simple as that. I have probably half a dozen variations of my favorite ships, all for different unexpected surprises. The best example of this is the Hookbill.
Polarized
standard MSE
dual rep
TD armor
dual prop shield
dual MASB
LML kite with:
-2x SSE
-dual TD
-dual Sensor Sampener
They all have fantastically different engagement profiles and ensure that I can always find a new and interesting way to fly my favorite hull. And it’s not just killing miners and explorers either.

I know and you dock up and refit depending on who you’re fighting and use specific counter fits.
Everyone does that to a degree but I kind of prefer freestyle flying and yeah I’m sorry I use off-meta setups like rail Taranis and the game is unplayable for me right now until I build my new pc.
We can talk more seriously when I come back to the game this summer, I’m out for now.
This is what am I’m talking about. There’s no real hard counter to it in its ship class.
This what I mean when i say we cant get a fair fight:
A good example is that we go into an ESS in over propped Stabbers. There’s 4 or 5 of us, we are there for a fight not really to rob the ESS. The response that comes is a dozen battleships and marauders. Ridiculous!
Yeah, I don’t try pvp in null, but same ■■■■ happens everywhere. Last time I tried roam around lowsec looking for fight I spent 2 hours flying around. Everyone either docked asap if he was doing pve, or cloaked, or docked and reshipped to t3c (I had just stupid Thorax). Eventually I gave up, attacked Gnosis that looked like a bait and …,. it was a bait and he brought an alt from nearby system as well making it 2x Gnosis against Thorax
.
That was last time I tried roaming anywhere looking for a fight and hardcommited to ganking.
This is a step too far. There are many many counters to the Fed Navy Comet in its ship class, for every fit.
Hookbill, dual web dual rep is by far the most effective against brawl or scram kite Comets.
Tristan, triple neut.
Probe Fleet or Heron Navy, dual neut.
Breacher or Kestrel, dual web.
Basically any destroyer, especially Thrasher, Algos, Dragoon
Dual web autocannon Firetail (versus Rails) or artillery (versus blasters).
I can go on!

The key is to try to outfly the blob. You can do that in many ways, but the key is usually being engageable but slippery. Long range with high speed or close range with tremendous damage is where you’ll find the most success. T1 cruisers suffer. The only way to improve is to practice. Such is the price of punching up.
Tristan, triple neut. sounds like a good option. Not sure about Breacher or Kestrel, dual web. they are to squishy.
I was beaten in a Thrasher vs that comet fit. I had short range ammo loaded. He scram kited me with the AB and got outside of my range. By the time i reload to barrage it was to late I was dead. Sure you will murder any frig in a Thrasher if you can get them pinned down and taking the full force of you guns.
The Thrasher gets a small range bonus (optimal) and a huge tracking bonus. That means you always want to preload Fusion or Barrage against most armor frigates. If you think a ship can DPS you down (like a blaster Comet at 0), you can load Hail, but I really prefer Fusion.
You can hit out to 10k with faction ammo which is really good news for getting rid of those scram-kiting frigates. Barrage hits about to 15 but I’ve hit Slicers at 20km before. Not enough to save me, mind you, but I still hit.
