Anticosti Island (French: Île d’Anticosti; Innu: Notiskuan; Mi’kmaq: Natigostec) is an island in the Minganie Regional County Municipality, in administrative region of Côte-Nord, the province of Quebec, Canada.

This island is located at the outlet of the Saint Lawrence River into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, between 49° and 50° N., and between 61° 40’ and 64° 30’ W. At 7,892.52 km2 (3,047.32 sq mi) in size, it is the 90th largest island in the world and 20th largest island in Canada. Anticosti Island is separated on the north from the Côte-Nord region of Quebec (the Labrador Peninsula) by the Jacques Cartier Strait, and on the south from the Gaspé Peninsula by the Honguedo Strait.

Anticosti Island is larger than Prince Edward Island but sparsely populated (240 people in 2011[1]), with most of the permanent population in the village of Port-Menier on the western tip of the island, consisting chiefly of the keepers of the lighthouses erected by the Canadian government.[2] The entire island constitutes one municipality known as L’Île-d’Anticosti.

Due to more than 400 shipwrecks off its coasts, Anticosti Island is sometimes called the “Cemetery of the Gulf”.[3]

It remains to be seen. I first learned about in Peter Diamandis’s book: “Abundance: The Future is Better Than You Think” published in 2011. Aeroponics was part of the exponential technologies needed to transform the world so it can support a much bigger population. To be honest, I wrote about that book to my gov. when the book first came out but it got ignored. United Arab Emirates embraced the author and they invite him every year to give conferences in Abu Dhabi.

IBM Computers, vintage film. Painfully rescued from an ancient VHS tape, we present a vintage IBM promotional film on computer developments up to about 1970. Many early machines are touched on very briefly, ending with a mention of an IBM customer information and control system used by Houston Lighting & Power Company, and other material. Historical value rests mostly with the original audio narrative. Worth sharing for those who love early IBM history. Hope you enjoy.

ENIAC Computer History, an educational film: The First Large Scale, Programmable, General Purpose Electronic Digital Computer ~ ENIAC - original 1946 announcement film, restored & new narration. ENIAC, “Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer”, was designed by J. Presper Eckert and Dr. John Mauchly. ENIAC used 18,000 vacuum tubes. This rare film shows the ENIAC in operation in February 1946, when it was first announced to the public. Features the designers Dr. John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, and the U.S. Army liaison Herman Goldstine. Film shows many of the women in the ENIAC computing environment, as programmers, analysts and operators, configuring ENIAC for computational problem solving.

Co-inventors and designers of ENIAC, J. P. Eckert and Dr. John Mauchly, founded one of the FIRST companies founded expressly to build electronic business computers: “Electronic Control Company”, which was later incorporated as the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (“EMCC”) in Philadelphia. EMCC became part of Remington-Rand in 1950.

Eckert and Mauchly also designed and built the BINAC (1949) and the famous UNIVAC I (1951) computers. Their pioneering work was instrumental in the rise of the early electronic digital computer industry.

In 1997, six of the women most involved in the programming and operating of the ENIAC were inducted into the “Women in Technology International Hall of Fame.” They were Kathleen McNulty Mauchly (Antonelli), Jean Jennings Bartik, Frances Synder Holber, Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer, Frances Bilas Spence and Ruth Lichterman Teitelbaum.

This 9 minute film gives you a unique view into some of the very earliest days of large scale electronic computing. Modern narration has been added to the film, which was originally silent. Restoration/editing-- Mark Greenia; Modern Narration-- Patrick Phillips.

Alan Kay

He is best known for his pioneering work on object-oriented programming and windowing graphical user interface (GUI) design.

Early life and work

He is also the architect of the modern overlapping windowing graphical user interface (GUI).

Tweak

In 2001, it became clear that the Etoy architecture in Squeak had reached its limits in what the Morphic interface infrastructure could do. Andreas Raab was a researcher working in Kay’s group, then at Hewlett-Packard. He proposed defining a “script process” and providing a default scheduling mechanism that avoids several more general problems.[14] The result was a new user interface, proposed to replace the Squeak Morphic user interface in the future. Tweak added mechanisms of islands, asynchronous messaging, players and costumes, language extensions, projects, and tile scripting.[15] Its underlying object system is class-based, but to users (during programming) it acts like it is prototype-based. Tweak objects are created and run in Tweak project windows.

User interface and interaction design

Designing the visual composition and temporal behavior of a GUI is an important part of software application programming in the area of human–computer interaction.

Its goal is to enhance the efficiency and ease of use for the underlying logical design of a stored program,
a design discipline named usability .

Methods of user-centered design are used to ensure that the visual language introduced in the design is well-tailored to the tasks.

The graphical user interface is presented (displayed) on the computer screen. It is the result of processed user input and usually the main interface for human-machine interaction. The touch user interfaces popular on small mobile devices are an overlay of the visual output to the visual input.

Computer History: Original IBM film announcing IBM’s “Systems Network Architecture” (or SNA), released in 1974. SNA is a collection of formats and protocols for interconnecting computers and their resources for optimal communication. SNA is described very clearly in this film, despite its technical nature. An animated illustration is included. One could describe this as “SNA 101” which is a great place to get started. See the technical links below if you want to delve deeper in to SNA. It was heavily promoted by IBM at the time of its release and for years afterwards.
_ The film is good quality color and sound, run time 10 minutes. Actual title is “Link to the Future.” Courtesy of IBM Archives and Hagley Museum & Library. Uploaded by Computer History Archives Project (CHAP). We hope you enjoy this gem from the past.

Time for me to go to sleep… today I found a interesting sight in War Thunder’s latest map, Seversk-13. The map represents some secret Soviet location, with a small village and farms and two residential complexes made of typical Kruschevskaya appartments, with children play areas, small gardens and some construction works going on. I took one of the roads from northwest spawn to capture point A and run into three Lada cars parked by the road (one of them I think it’s a police car) and a shrot stretch away a small farm with a car crashed on a fence and the driver’s door open… quite a GTA-esque scene with the background of (in that game) WW2 era armored vehicles! Unfortunately I was hearing engine sounds with no firendlies in their direction so I didn’t stop to capture screenshots…

And now I’m off to bed. Nighties lovelies!

Also: how is the weather at Jezero crater, Mars?

Hmm… sunny but chilly with high: -23.4° C and low: -82.5° C (-10° and -116° F). The data come from Perseverance’s instrument MEDA (Mars Environmental Dynamic Analyzer), a multinational instrument developed and assembled in Spain.

F-109.

The Bell D-188A (unofficial military designations XF-109 /XF3L ) was a proposed eight-engine Mach 2–capable vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) tiltjet fighter that never proceeded past the mock-up stage.

An interdictor is a type of attack aircraft that operates far behind enemy lines, with the express intent of interdicting the enemy’s military targets, most notably those involved in logistics.

The interdiction prevents or delays enemy forces and supplies from reaching the battlefront; the term has generally fallen from use.

The strike fighter is a closely related concept,[citation needed] but puts more emphasis on air-to-air combat capabilities as a multirole combat aircraft.

Larger versions of the interdictor concept are generally referred to as penetrators.

I decided to cut ties with all the people weighing my down.
My climbing partner didn’t appreciate it.

My wife asked me, “Hey, can you give examples of jobs that don’t exist anymore?”
I said, “Steve.”

As I handed my dad his 70th birthday card, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and said

Time to go to bed… Nighties lovelies!

Also: have you ever had a feeling of being followed…?

The test subjects weren’t trying to outrun the drone, but anyway it’s shocking how much artificial vision and 3D mapping they’ve put in such a small machine…

That monkey is playing with his brain activity… and he doesn’t even misses the feedback from actually moving the arm, just is happy moving the cursor with his mind even if the hand won’t move… it’s a little scary, but also, looks like a promising step forward for paralyzed people, since as long as they could trigger their movement centers by thinking about moving, they could actually move things IRL…

Time to go to sleep, still with my old brain-to-muscle interface… nighties lovelies!

Also: Northrop Grumman rescued a second satellite…

This might not be as spectacular as what SpaceX or Rocket Labs do, but it’s a game changer of its own: By docking a propulsion unit to functioning satellites which exhausted their fuel, those satellites can operate for longer rather than become space trash. Further, the MEV (Mission Extension Vehicle) can also deorbit the satellite if it stops working. So far MEV-1 and MEV-2 have rescued two satellites for Intelsat, but the technique could be used for other satellites since the MEV uses the main propulsor nozzle as docking port.

Global median dwell time drops below one month for first time

Over the past decade, Mandiant has observed a trending reduction in global median
dwell time (defined as the duration between the start of a cyber intrusion and when it
is identified). This measure went from over one year in 2011 to just 24 days in 2020 –
that’s more than twice as quickly identified in comparison to last year’s report with a
median dwell time of 56 days.

This reduction is attributed to continued development and improvement of organizational detection and response capabilities, along with the surge of multifaceted extortion and ransomware intrusions.
