Got dragged along to a church once and turned into an altar boy. Worked out about the same.

Photograph: Ballet dancer Tanaquil Le Clercq poses for Vogue magazine, by Gjon Mili (1951)

Tanaquil Le Clercq (b. Paris 1929, ++2000 Manhattan) was the Principal Dancer for the New York Ballet since 1948 until the company’s tour in Europe in 1956, when Le Clercq contracted polio in Copenhagen. Although she recovered some movement to her torso and upper limbs, she was left paralyzed from the waist below, and became a ballet teacher using her arms and hands as legs and feet to teach the moves.

Bonus: turning that image upside down is quite unsettling

...yikes...

She adapted, overcame, and found a way to to still be part of something that she enjoyed and loved.

That in all likelihood saved her life and gave purpose to what would otherwise have been a miserable existence.

Pls don’t be a strawberry cake

/ as sweet as your reply to me was pls don’t be the only strawberry on the cake.

There are many sides and strawberries are just one of the toppings.

I want passion fruit also along with cream and pineapple.

For some “reason unknown” the polio illness is making a comeback. The activists who are trying to eradicate such illnesses are facing quite the backlash. The saddest thing is that “everybody is a gangsta until it happens to their loved ones” and they don’t don’t care to provide an alternative solution. No innocent child should go through an ordeal such as that illness.

Here in this country of the USA. There is a certain segment that are so antivax. That literally those people are now in the position to hamper vaccination efforts. Sadly polio is not the only disease making a come back either.

She should be OK. They have had big families and usually very closely connected to each other.

Other than that she will have support from Government.

Yiole’s photos of old times inspired me to post old photos as well, rather than only that red headed nymph.

The photo above is taken by Ara GĂŒler, the late Turkish-Armenian photographer in İstanbul in 1950. The title is “Kumpkapı fishermen returning to port in the first light of dawn”.

Ara was known to be “The Eye of Istanbul”, but he took photographs at many other places and times as well during his 90 years on this planet. His photos might mean little more than pretty photography to many, but those who have lived in the old times and the places he took photos can just take a look at one of his photos and tell the entire story just from a single photograph.
