Apparently the girl was 12 or 13 at the time, which explains why the shotgun looks so big compared to her. I have no idea what kind of bird is that… Paneth was an enthusiast user of autochromes and used to shoot color pictures, often with sensitive matherial of his own making.
I have some gift ideas for those people.. Though I do not think they would appreciate the gifts all that much. But it would be what they have so richly earned and deserve. For all that have done over the many years…
As someone that hunted. I understand that hunting is not as big across the pond as it is here. In all honesty I ate what I shot. Shared a lot of the meat in the case of dear with others. Hunting and fishing was something I grew up doing. It was as much of part of growing up as being a Boy Scout.
I suspect the then young lady in that picture was eating that bird that same night. As it was 1925 Austria. The economy then was not any better than Germany at the time. So she was hunting for the table.
I am an American and yeah hunting is huge. Schools shut down in many rural areas when hunting season opens. When I was in high school 9 through 12. The school I went to was still fighting it and losing. Threatening everything from suspension to a lesser grade to anything else they thought would stop kids from going hunting.
The school knew that almost every kid was going hunting with their parents and family. Most often their father, uncles, and maybe a female family member. The school board was informed that should they decide to enforce their fool rule. They would not be there the next year. Only one school board ever tried to call that bluff. Only to find out it was no bluff.
I never took off when the season first opened. One reason was the fools from the city were out there and would shoot just about anything that moved. The other a 2:30 am wake up. To go sit in the very cold northern October woods by 4 am was a nonstarter. Bambi and his mama were still going to be out there on the weekend. The first Saturday after the season opened. My brothers and I could track and walk those woods just as easily.
Attitude, temperament, cheerfulness and talking style was exactly the same except he was speaking Turkish. I told him about it and it brightened his day immensely.
