My grandparents owned one of the shanties in this picture, built by my grandfather with help from other men. They lived in it for some 3 or 4 years and eventually moved on to a four-floors public housing with no running water. Eventually my grandpa and other men managed to get the water tank on the roof fixed, but my father and uncle spent two years bringing water up from the public fountain in the street… the shanty itself was bought for a small sum during a improvement plan by the municipality in the 1960s; my grandfather helped brokering a deal so the gypsy families would also get something after being evicted so the shanties could be demolished, specially the ones closer to the water line which would get water damaged during heavy storms.
How my grandfather, grandson of a millionaire, ended up migrating and living in a shanty in Barcelona would be a different story…

Actually, for the 1st time I wish we were together when I put that list up! It took me a while scrolling up the thd picking out what you would punch me in the shoulder over. I laughed so hard, I think we would have had a fun time.
And those were not all my choices!
