I didn’t experience any catastrophic losses (but for my first long forgotten character and the misadventure of my first battleship), but good PvP games respect the time of players, and EVE has never done that.
As for the Jump Fatigue fiasco, although it compounded downstream, by then highsec already was in decline. Same with the Age of Scarcity: they were minor losses of actual human players compared to shedding the soloers who didn’t multibox 40 accounts.
Oh nice, then the AI(s) and Internet got it wrong, please tell, what caused the 2014 dip?
The other causes mentioned were burnout from massive nullsec wars like the Halloween War and an updated skill queue that made frequent logins unnecessary. I haven’t checked neither of these, but I recall the jump fatigue issue and how it made the already tedious task of hauling stuff an even more tedious timer scheduling second job.
That was on top of the long arching neglect of the solo/casual/PvE/highsec silent masses, who also took a hit from Phoebe as nullsec logistics, production and destruction slowed down, crashing the demand and prices of minerals.
(As a side note, fukking space truckers to stop teleporting armies was peak Can’t Competence Properly (CCP) design, if only there was a way to tell a jump freighter from a dreadnought…)
Never played or watched vods to find out how, yet to see how much effort some people must of went through to achieve those rooms and buildings is actually amazing.
Yeah, with the right shader pack Minecraft can look genuinely impressive. It’s openGL though, so it runs poorly on Nvidia and is barely playable on AMD.
I remember making towers evewhere I went in minecraft, and these were always very specific with design I developed back then, I had a paper with everything written and with pictures I drew on it, so I could place blocks everywhere so it looks very thatched roof like and circular. In a game where everything is square.
I remember I ended up building the last one on a mushroom island, far away on the middle of ocean.

This kind of reed roofs or cañizos were used at beaches to provide some shade for fishermen working on their boats and tools, and once tourists began visiting Spanish beaches they quickly were reused for improvised beach bars that would evolve into the famous chiringuitos, a staple of Spanish beaches which used to be temporary structures and eventually became semi-permanent and even brick and mortar buildings.
That looks like a 90% hit on a 2% demographic… Your niche was trashed, but we were kind of talking about big crashes of large populations.
Everyone has their own Theory Of My Niche Will Save The Game, but mine is backed up by actual evidence that a certain demographic existed and washed away as CCP prioritized the wrong people for right reasons. All in all, nullsec has always been made of organised blocks who can throw their weight and lobby around, and so CCP has semi-competently kept them around in all their 5k glory whereas the 20k crowd of lonely highsec hearts was impossible to herd into action.
I remember Brisc Asshole Rubal telling me that our problem was not a problem when he supposedly wanted to engage highseccers during his CSM term, that along with Mike Azariah buying in the idiocy of “PvE should be a gateway to PvP” brought an end to my attempts to escalate the issue with player representatives for what little it was worth…
