Actually there were female samurai, didn’t realise this:
Empress Jingu (169–269) is considered the first female samurai in Japan and the world. She was a powerful ruler who led an invasion of Korea after her husband’s death.
Explanation
- Empress Jingu was a semi-legendary ruler who defied social norms of her time.
- She led an invasion of Korea while pregnant with the future Emperor Ojin.
- Legend says she bound her body, wore men’s clothes, and rode into battle.
- She was the first Japanese woman to appear on Japanese currency.
Other famous female samurai include:
- Tomoe Gozen: A famous onna-bugeisha who fought in the Genpei War (1180-1185). Her story is told in the Tale of the Heike.
- Nakano Takeko: The leader of the Jōshitai (Girls’ Army) who fought in the Boshin War.
- Niijima Yae: A samurai who fought in the Boshin War and served as a nurse in the Russo-Japanese War and the Sino-Japanese War. She became a scholar and a symbol of women’s rights.
