Updated System Requirements - Discontinue macOS 11 (Big Sur) Support

Depends on the definition of that 20yr old system. I also tend to run things on old hardware as long as possible, but that doesn’t mean that the old hardware won’t get a new GPU from time to time to adapt to new capabilities and more VRAM as needed for example.

Currently EVE runs just fine including multiboxing on 17 year old amd phenom 6-cores for example. It will run other games as well but not all modern games since they require modern CPU instructions.

Other systems i run have 16-core G34 CPUs from 2012 with 256GB of RAM. That system just crunches away at EVE and other games. It also features AVX and SSE4.x so will run newest software.

Also i do not use windows to run EVE, so i am not bound to that Windows 11 stupid system requirements of a TPM and now UEFI and whatever else it requires.

Nope, built my own like every PC I’ve had since 1994. 11700k, 64GB DDR4 3200mHz, RTX 3060TI on a Z590 Wifi Pro board. Built 5 years ago and thanks to consoles holding everything gaming back as usual, still plays everything new just fine. Only plebs with more money than knowledge buy pre-built slop. As for Apple, I own two Apple devices. Two 13" iPad Air M2’s that have spent their entire existence being the monitors for my security cameras.

My previous system, which is still sitting here, is a 4790k, 32GB DDR3 2400mHz RX580 on a Z97 board. It can still run most things, doesn’t make it secure and up to modern standards.

With that hardware i could perfectly well run a modern operating system in a secure way. How come you can’t? Because you are using an operating system that you don’t have under control anymore and that makes your PC and the data on it belong to the vendor of the operating system rather than yourself?

In my opinion you are confusing and simplifying a lot of things and i also think the effort for discussing it will be in vain and surely also generally in the wrong location.

Linux isn’t a modern operating system, its a toy for broke boys who can’t afford to simp for Apple. It has Windows 10 on it, it will just never be attached to the internet again. And why would I stay on DDR3 and a 4th gen cpu ( albeit the best CPU Intel ever made overall )? I may not be rich, but I’m not broke.

Uh…I’m a windows enjoyer, but this statement alone shows how little you know about it.

MacOS uses a Linux kernal, so does Android, so does all the smart whatevers you have in your house, so does all the hi-tech state of the art medical stuff that gets used.

The reason why Linux doesn’t get game support is because it is open source, and as a result has thousands of variants.

Wow, all the flagged posts in this thread.

I’m well loved.

No, it uses a FreeBSD one.

NB BSD is not Linux

They all use GNU tho, which is canonically not Unix, but is literally Unix.

…

geeks eh?

Right. Nowadays Windows is the niche system. All your appliances, NAS, phones, TVs, fridges, your MacOS stuff, your Playstation, your SAT-Receiver, your car, almost everything runs on a unix-based operating system these days. Be it BSD or Linux based.

The efforts of steam, wine and the like make gaming on linux possible. Not effortlessly, but possible. And if it runs, it often runs with higher fps than on windows.

I have been playing EVE on Linux for almost 20 years now. I started when it was half-officially supported by CCP paying Cedega for the MaxOS porting layer which in turn made Cedega run EVE on Linux as well. Since Cedega went out of business i am using wine. It was not always a smooth ride, but solutions were always found. The longest downtime i ever had was about 2-3 weeks iirc.

If I want to shut your air conditioner off in your car for non-payment of the air package subscription or run an arduino to control how many beats a minute for my Christmas lights to flash, there’s linux.

For an actual computer where I can get actual ■■■■ done without jumping through 20 hoops just to get a boot up, there’s Windows.

It’s the only OS that still has all working drivers made for most of the Roland and Korg Synthesizers I bought that same year… None of them bothered updating the driver to even Sonoma.
Sonoma is the base OS for the M2 mac. And is way faster than Tahoe for daily use.
Could it be possible to release an EOL plan for EVE that will still run on Big Sur ( and Sonoma later) like a working Launcher being archived with the tag EOL for BIG SUR?

I feel it could soon be the time of SONOMA too (not Ventura, that is already too much compromised with “security patches”)…

Can the Launcher works without Chromium or Steam? Or they have some critical components for the game to work correctly?? An EOL PLAN should include an alternative for those critical parts too to guarantee it will continue to work in say… 20 years??

Sry for the wall of text, I tried to be the most concise as possible.

I installed it on Nobara43 and it runs smooth as cake, I think it was an .rm package I installed.
The I used Brave to connect to the net and all the other updates were managed directly with the system updater. I did not have to install it through Lutris/wine as Proton13 has just received another update and games are all working way better than on windows. Some other titles don’t work as remotely as good natively on Linux. I would like to compare the FPS and possibly the lag and make a comparison, but with a macM2 with Tahoe13 on. No Windows anymore for me. Except XP, 7, 10. All strictly offline.

MacOS is basically all “brew this, brew that”…
it has a LOT of limitations from OG Linux Terminals like Mint…

I have a W10 GO SSD with usb-C and it performs quite well. And most importantly, id does NOT rewrite all SSDs connected to the machine and out its stupid header on everyone, making multiboot impossible. The first sign of misbehavior I unplugged it hot and that’s it. Enough is enough.

It isn’t linux, it’s FreeBSD, you can install all the FreeBSD ports and packages on it if you want.

and it has a working C compiler so you can use the Source.
