I was annoyed by Microsoft’s reminder of the end of Windows 10 support an hour or so ago. I intend to go as long as possible without upgrading, primarily because I have objections to the forced use of TPM 2.0. Mind you, my computer has it (not enabled) and is more than powerful enough (top-of-the-line, actually), but I have objections to TPM 2.0 and Windows 11 that are a matter of principle, primarily my distrust of allowing anyone but me to make my computer secure along with my disdain for all the new crypto security. How long will CCP and EVE Online allow Windows 10 users without TPM 2.0 to play? I’m hoping it’s at least five years as I really hate what Microsoft is doing and I can’t stand any of the new “features” they keep adding, especially the obtuse crypto security and garbage like BitLocker. Not to mention the horror stories of games running like sludge on Windows 11. I want to handle my own security for as long as possible.
I don’t think that there is an immediate danger for a discontinued support for Win10. It’s still by far the most used operating system, Win11 is not catching up any time soon, and support for legacy OS like Win7 was only recently implemented.
I installed windows 11 on my pc, and took it off less than a week later, it was horrible.
Win 11 is hot garbage, almost no one wants it. Which is they’re cutting support for 10 in order to FORCE you to use 11. It’s exploitation.
Support for Windows 10 ends in October of this year (at least that is Microsnot’s position at the moment).
Does the mean it will quit working, no.
Does that mean you shouldn’t use it, well that is personal choice.
The longer it goes unsupported and you still use an OS, is where the danger lays.
You can always do like some of us, and go Linux. That will keep good hardware out the e-waste system longer.
From the quality of the contents of your post, I assure you, your computer is no secure.
And have to go through ten different distros and 137 command lines just to get EVE to launch? No thanks…
The next version of Windows is planned to be announced later this year. Windows 12 ( aka Next Valley? ) will replace 11. Technically Windows 10 will stop this year from Microsoft. Support for Windows 10 editions which are not in the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) is set to end on October 14, 2025. – Wikipedia
I run 10 myself and I no longer get major updates. After that, it is up to each individual software companies ( e.g. CCP ) as to how much or how little support they will offer. One option everyone has is switching OS to Mac or Linux. I ran Linux OS for about a year or more on my old laptop. I could not tell much difference. My old laptop was +8 years old and couldn’t keep up with the new OS. I now run a newer desktop, my son bought for me, but I never upgraded it to Windows 11.
I thought it was very funny when I logged into my old Guild Wars account and they announced they were ending support for Windows XP and 32 bit machines in 2021. Now that is dedication!
Have fun!
I picked a distro, had to do little to no command line, and playing Eve with no noticeable issues.
I just believe in keeping as much e-waste out of the recycle/trash system. To many people think that Micro$oft is forcing them to get new computers and they don’t have any choice.
I have Win 11 on a Chromebook cos Win 10 doesn’t work on it (no drivers and it is beyond me to write my own).
I was able to use a bit of registry-foo during setup to skip the TPM check entirely. It’s do’able.
My only worry is that one day an update will trigger a cascade of absolute nonsense because there’s no TPM, but sure I’ll just throw Chrome OS back on it and dump it on eBay if that happens.
It is the main system used by people using windows. Most people agree that 11 is hot garbage. I don’t see them cutting support for the most used system any time soon.
Only reason windows cut support is because they are trying to force everyone into windows 11
They managed to get us to move from '98 to XP and from XP to 7 and from 7 to 10 with these deprecation tactics.
Some poor sods even ended up on ME, Vista and 8 for a while.
They’ll get us all on 12.
As long as 12 is as good as XP, 7 or 10.
History suggests it will, but they’ll find a way to screw it up.
When first released, XP, 7 and 10 all had their problems, but eventually the software matured and was decent.
By contrast, the others managed to get worse; you can tell just how bad they were by how quickly Microsoft were to move away from them with I think Vista being the quickest to be replaced.
I don’t know if he actually believes that or just trolling Linux OS. However you are absolutely correct, I have been using Linux for 15 years and some distros can run directly off a 3.0 USB thumb drive without installation. Try to get Windows to do that trick eh?
I have no issue with people sticking to Windows 10 like glue. I loved XP SP3. However the hardware changed, so I went to Linux OS. Speaking of XP, the US Military still uses XP.
I have tried Linux like 3 or 4 times over the years. Every time I came to a point where I couldn’t install some hardware correctly, had to live with lack in functionality of some hardware (I mean, it worked, but missing Dolby Decoding or Virtual Surround on a top notch Headset is just… meh), or would have to read some nerdforums for hours and use baindaid fixes to get things done.
Maybe I try again some day, but currently my Windows System runs extremely well, without any issues, faster than I can click anyway and I seriously doubt even the most perfect Linux system could offer me a noticable benefit.
I know Linux OS is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you try another distro I am currently recommending Manjaro. I have mine set up to appear like XP, it functions well with Eve without much ado. I run it with straight Wine, while there are options to install Lutris or Steam launchers as well. If you read through the recent my recent issues running this game, most were due to which version of wine I was using. I rolled back the wine release to fix my minor problems. My advice to the Windows 10 users is to hang on to their comfort, but plan to move along when the time comes. That could be years down the road. Back in 2010, I ran Linux side by side with XP, when you reboot you get a choice of which OS to boot. Roughly 8 months later, I realized I was no longer booting into XP for much of anything at all.
I would consider moving back to Windows, if they removed all their bloatware. I used Windows 3.11 to XP and all of those versions came with a functioning OS, Solitaire, Minesweeper, and a clock. Whatever else you needed, you added it to the system. We all know they will never streamline their OS.
Personally I love linux and if I could just run the programmes I need for work, reliably, I’d be all-in.
I guess you’ve never read the Linux help section of this forum and some of the things they’ve had to do in order to get EVE to even run.
Whereas with Windows, it just…works.
What I find quite funny and ironic is the lengths that Linux users go to in order to make it still look like Windows…
