[Urgent]About urgent and practical advice that needs to be addressed

Putting single characters together is fine, pretty much everyone can do that, but when you combine them into words, it turns into unfamiliar gibberish.

The numbers 0123456789 are easy to recognize, with each number representing a person. Every combination of numbers is still pretty easy to identify, but the combinations themselves are just combinations with no real meaning. For example, remembering who the person represented by 46 is takes time, and when there are a lot of people together, and the screen is full of numbers, you can really feel the chaos. It’s really overwhelming. It’s like encrypting everyone’s names, so your teammates can’t recognize your name, or they’d have to spend a lot of effort to remember you. Even if a teammate gets caught by the enemy and you know it through voice chat, you still can’t tell who they are in the game.

If you use oranges, apples, bananas… it will be obvious at a glance, and you can name them off the top of your head. Anyone who doesn’t know English will run into this kind of trouble.

If the ID only supports Chinese and doesn’t allow English, is it appropriate to say it like that?

You think it’s fine because you can recognize English IDs, but try recognizing IDs that are all in Chinese characters, then say that again. At that point, all those unfamiliar symbols would drive you crazy.

Are Latin characters as unfamiliar to you as Chinese characters are to me?

I have zero experience with Chinese characters, amd while I gre up with the Patin alphabet I have some familiarity with some non-Latin alphabets.

Have you never been taught Latin alphabets at school in China?

And is it bad if you get to practice reading the Latin alphabet in EVE?

Personally I like that I can practice my English in this game, I think it’s a useful skill to be able to read and write a different language than my own.

A.B.C.D.E is fine on its own, but when put together in a string, it doesn’t recognize it, 45646556.51311313123.484654351.8415122.8451132132.489412312.You know every number, now you write down the different IDs formed by combining the numbers, they represent different IDs. Are you freaking out?Can you tell, among all the numbers on the fleet, which ID belongs to your good buddy?

First two or three chararcters in combination with length of the names would probably be enough to recognize them.

Also I’ve got portraits visible, I often recognize who talks by their portrait too.

During a fight I don’t do those things, I use a watch list with colours, broadcasts and ship types to see what I need.

Talking to you is pointless, it’s like playing the lute to a cow. I suggest you try downloading the China Dawn server and check it out.

First of all, making sarcastic remarks is not the same as giving advice. Secondly, just because you think English nicknames are fine doesn’t mean everyone else is as proficient in their own language as you are. This suggestion is mainly to help Simplified Chinese players quickly and easily see if familiar friends show up in their guild, and it won’t even affect those who want to view the original English nicknames. Even if you feel like you can figure out what you need just by colors, broadcasts, and the ship type list, that’s just your way of playing—it doesn’t mean you can or should force others to play the game your way.

It was not my intention to be sarcastic in this thread.

I understand what you mean and I agree that names should to be recognizable, especially amongst friends.

Your examples given in response to my questions have made the extend of the problem clearer to me.

A challenge is that name changes are a controversial topic in EVE where actions are supposed to have consequences, so replacing names is not a good option.

But an alternative ways of showing a note with a nickname could also solve your problem, correct?

The current common way I’ve seen of doing these notes is to have nicknames as titles in the character window. I can imagine that this is not easy or quick enough as it requires players to open the character window of every player they wish to check.

A better solution I can think of is to have the nickname show as a mouseover text when hovering a player name, just like the recently added achievement titles.

Would that work for you?

Maybe we can ask if FC can give players the ability to set nicknames that take the place of these mouseover titles, for alliance members only.

We have a similar issue in our alliance with bookmarks, which Chinese players write in Chinese and others in Latin and everyone has troubles with translation.

The only real solution is an in game translation engine which displays all such names translated for the local client into a local language.

The solution suggested by the original poster seems an easy way to provide a half-solution while the full one is programmed.

I can see how translation issues exist and could be solved, but how would you translate names?

The auto-generated names of characters that a large group of players (including myself) are using aren’t even English, they’re just in a Latin script but have roots in languages across the world with scandinavian minmatar surnames, french gallente surnames, indonesian and japanese caldari surnames and many more.

You can translate the phonemes usually.

Automated transcription is a decent solution in that it would let anyone “read” any language in their preferred script, but it seems to me like it would be a lot more work to get that right than just adding a “nickname” field to the character sheet that accepts characters in any supported script and can be toggled to show in parentheses after the character name in chat.

English is widely considered the current universal language, serving as the primary global lingua franca for international business, diplomacy, science, aviation, and the internet. While no single language is spoken by every person on Earth, English is the most geographically widespread and dominant medium for cross-cultural communication.

Damn history… who could know which colonialism could have this major effect.

When measuring the percentage of websites containing content in a specific language, English leads with 49.3% (as of late 2025), followed by Spanish at 6.0% and German at 5.9%

Year 2026 here… you should be able to speak english if you want to chill on the internet.

If you didn´t got this idea 30 Years ago… i am unsure how you access the major information on the internet. You can speak with your friends you native language.. but don´t expect others to learn a minor langauge just for a game.

You’re speaking as someone only familiar with the English internet. For many European languages, it’s indeed true that much information cannot be found in their own language, and reading English sites is necessary (and because of imperialism is generally fairly easy for them). The same does not apply to Russians and Chinese, our languages are large enough that if we desired to, we could stay entirely on the internet in our own languages. Runet should be familiar even to westerners, and the Chinese are the largest country on the internet both in absolute terms and in relative usage. CCP has no sort of duty to accommodate anyone, they could make the whole game exclusively in Icelandic if they wanted to, but to earn money they need to reach a wide audience, and that means making reasonable accommodations for speakers of Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, and any number of other languages. A nickname field where we can fill out names that are more legible for us is just such a reasonable accommodation.

Ok, it looks like i don´t get the point why there is a need to identify people comming from the same lang. background by the titel field.

But i would love to understand the title field without using an external Translation tool.
Either by translating it or forcing it to be english.

I agree, that’s the core of my argument here. The character names themselves should be restricted to the latin alphabet, as they are now. That lets the majority of the userbase read and recognise names, even if the names themselves may be in a foreign language, as well as enter them into the likes of zkill to look someone up (ie an English user may not understand what “Shenyao” means, but he can read the name and recognise the character), while the nickname could be set to “参曜” letting Chinese users read the intended name without having to go backwards through pinyin (which they actually can’t in the first place, the name would need to be written as “Shēnyào” to be correct, which EVE doesn’t support). In local the character could be shown as “Shenyao <参曜>” so that both names are immediately visible. I think this approach benefits everyone.

The following quote is shortend and added up

** Note, i know why this is forbidden since it could create alternate version for existing Nicks like
Kanē Càrnifēx

Now i got it and this also something i would support. (min. Shenyao <参曜> )
I would support this also for Cyrillic and others.
You could add some rules arround it so it doesn´t get abused.
(We unable to change the Nickname, so the <参曜> is a onetime setup)

Thank you very much for taking the time to be with me.
I would consider this also as a major QoL for the unity of the playerbase.

Warum wurde es gelöscht? Gegen welche Regel hat es verstoßen? Ich brauche eine Erklärung.
Why was it deleted? What rule did it violate? I need an explanation.

I would say because we need to translate your respond.
Maybe you just want to auto translate it via any internet service.
I know its not super accurate but it may helps bringing up your point.
