Maybe you need to hang out with less of them?
There’s plenty of Canadians, Brazilians and Mexicans who disagree entirely.
Not every American is U.S.-American.
People abusing the word “American” …
… because they’re dumb …
… doesn’t actually matter.
In any case, that guy’s an asshole.
…
I appreciate the RoA! Thanks!
For the U.S.-Americans in here: Republic of Austria.
No, we’re not next to Iran.
Yes, our trees do explode, killing hundreds every year.
Austrians gave the world Kaiserschmarrn, Slow Motion, the main blood groups, the Rhesus Factor, the Schrödinger Equation, Snow Globes, the Internal Combustion Engine, Psychology, lots of other things, two world wars and Hitler specifically.
You’re very welcome.
(also the EU isn’t yet a union of states and I’m not a fan of the idea anyway)
I have spoken to thousands and thousands of Canadians as well as being born in that country and have never once - in my nearly sixty years of life - heard one insist on being called American. Nor any of the Mexicans I met in the years I lived there. I have no reason to believe Brazilians would be any different.
You may have heard someone call themselves Mexican American but it doesn’t even remotely mean what you apparently think it does. Or do you think someone who identifies as African American is from Eastern America? Or an Irish American is from North East America?
I have heard people living in South America grumble that Americans shouldn’t be called Americans… but nobody in Latin America calls Americans that anyway - they use various forms of “Gringo.”
When I must be on voice comms, I have always said it was “Zooks” - although I chose the name partly because of its unknowable pronunciation. Sucks is pretty awesome, I gotta say.
Some years back, someone said they always said my name as Mystery Peen. You wouldn’t think there’d be more than one way to pronounce Mr Epeen. But there you go.
Well this took a hard turn into “Not a great thread” land.
