Can you point me to a video showing how to place a Citadel structure so that it gives me “instant” warp to a gate?
I know the basics but I do not know how to ensure I’m placing it in the same plane. I recently placed one which seems to be on the correct line but it is clearly not on the same plane.

How can you mess that up? 
You burn away from the gate with your tactical overlay active and make sure the gate stays at 0 km on the y-axis. Once you are a couple hundred kilometers off, you drop the structure and move it away from the gate until you can place it if it is still red on the drop spot. Align the undock to the gate and done.
You need to make sure that you are a 0 km height on the gate as you cannot move a structure up or down. It moves around with your ship. That and the correct undock alignment are the only things you should pay attention to when you drop it.

Easy peasy: I’m not the sharpest knife in the six-pack.
I think the problem is that I did a warp-to celestial and dropped a bookmark along the way.
As an industry-rat, I have seldom needed to even note the third dimension of Eve.
