You qualify the fact that you were not a spai with the fact that “they had no proof”… leaving me to wonder, were you in fact a spy?
And if so… well… seems like they did had proof…
Reminds me of the guy who covered himself in lemon juice before robbing two banks - because he read somewhere that lemon juice could be used to make invisible ink, and he therefore concluded that it would also make him invisible to the cameras… Just because you don’t think you’re leaving behind any clues/evidence/proof, doesn’t mean you aren’t.
