I checked first that others are experiencing this. They are….
My overview for suspect hunting is arranged so that suspects and people with red status all appear at the bottom of the overview. Those names will happily sit there until the player leaves the grid, docks, etc….even at Jita with 2000 people on grid.
All well and good so far. The names sit there and there is little movement. BUT….something weird and buggy happens the moment I move the cursor onto the overview. The names all jump about. A whole bunch of new names appear at the bottom of the list. This makes clicking on the name of a suspect absurd…as the name is jumping up the screen !
This is consistent and very repeatable. If I move the cursor off the overview, the names list settles down again. The minute I move the cursor back on the overview, the names jump about again.
This isn’t just a minor bug….it is something of which I have heard others say they were ( expletive ) annoyed.
Does the Dev team actually play the game…and howcome they have not noticed this ?
Does a small lock icon ( ) appear in the categories (top) row of your overview when this happens?
Because if yes then my guess is this is the function of the overview that locks the list so you can actually click what you want without items moving around. However maybe newly arriving names have to go somewhere so they go to the end of the list, which is no issue if you are not at the very end of it. Just speculation though.
If the above is correct you either have to list your targets at the top of the list or leave at least one entry of gap from the bottom and maybe that will eliminate the issue. Not sure if it will actually work but worth a try.
This is intentional. I want suspects at the bottom of the list. And when the cursor is not on the overview the list happily sits there as above…with new suspects showing up at the bottom and old ones leaving. It barely jumps about at all.
BUT…..the very act of simply moving the cursor onto the overview ( which one has to do to lock on a suspect ) causes the orange and red names to jump upwards….sometimes by as many as 10 or 15 names….which would not have happened had I not moved the cursor onto the overview.
The moment I move the cursor off the overview the list returns to as above.
Clearly…for someone who’s activity rests on split second timing and fast locking….this is very annoying.
Just imagine the same list with multiple white names ( i.e not suspects, red status, etc ) suddenly appearing at the bottom and pushing the rest of the names upwards. This happens the split second I move the cursor onto the overview….regardless of whether I even try to lock.
The split second I move the cursor off the overview all the white names disappear from the bottom and it returns to as in my image above. This is totally repeatable. Happens every time.
There is no reason why simply moving the cursor onto the list should affect its listing like that.
Again, I understood your description. The screenshot would help seeing if the lock icon is there or not when this happens as that could be one explanation for this behavior.
This means the list is locked and new entries will go at the bottom, this I assume includes your overview setting that suspects and criminals go to the bottom, in other words everything at the moment is locked but new entries (newly arriving capsuleers) will be put beyond the locked list. Just assuming.
While I don’t see it on your screenshots I assume you hold ctrl (lock target if clicked) while you’re doing this? Because that is one of the functions that triggers the list locking feature. Another is d-scanning (if you hold the d-scan button so you can click something to d-scan towards). If not then do you do something else that might trigger that function?
Because if you do then it is likely the intentional behavior of the overview, but if not then it should be a bug.
No, this happens regardless of whether I attempt to lock or not…or whether I have CTRL pressed or whatever. I only have to move the cursor onto the overview for it to happen. It is trigged instantly by the cursor moving onto the overview.
When the cursor is OFF the overview, only new suspects or red status go to the bottom. That’s the whole idea. The other new names get added above that, to all the white listed names.
When the cursor is ON the overview, all of a sudden the white names are piling onto the bottom of the list.
So effectively what happens is…a suspect shows up. Their name appears at the bottom of the list. I move the cursor to click on their name to lock on them….and their frickin name jumps up several spaces while I am trying to do this. Aaaarg !
The fact the lock icon is there suggest it might not be though, as that alters how the overview list is displayed. And as your screenshot actually shows the lock icon when you do something instead of the other screenshot that doesn’t have it when you don’t do something there is something clearly triggering this function.
The question is what is it that you do that activates the overview lock and whether it is a bug that causes it or if it’s intended behavior.
I fail to see why me simply moving the cursor onto the overview…that and nothing more…should change its display listing. There is no other action. The issue occurs whether the lock icon is there or not.
I find it hard to believe that anyone at CCP would ‘intend’ this to be the functionality. It’s probably trying to do something useful…but having the complete reverse effect.
Sidenote: You play with transparent overview and don’t mention that as major usage impairing feature?
But that’s what it does. I just moved my mouse cursor over the overview and it locked the focus column until I moved the cursor away again. It makes a lot of sense as you can actually click on things in a busy overview. Existing things stay where they are and new things appear below/above (depending on your sorting), so that you don’t need to move the mouse away from your desired targets (which otherwise would be pushed up/down the list).
It doesn’t actually ‘lock’ anything if the items are jumping about. How is one supposed to click on allegedly ‘locked’ things if they are jumping about ? It’s the complete reverse of what one actually wants. I want to be able to see a name on the list…move the cursor to it….and lock on it. What is the frikin point of it jumping up or down 4 or 5 lines when I attempt to do so ?
No…existing things do not stay where they are. That’s the whole point. The very act of new stuff appearing at the bottom of the screen pushes them up. The whole issue is that existing things are not staying where they are. Ironically they would if it didn’t lock….but on further testing the very act of it allegedly ‘locking’ is what makes the lines move….lol.
But it is the very locking itself that is pushing the items up or down the list. The locking is not ‘preventing’ that…now I’ve had more time to look at it, it is precisely what is causing it.
It seems to me that what’s happening is some combination of settings/setup is causing the functionality to be reversed.
When you have fully scrolled down the list will jump to the last entry automatically when new entries are added to the list. The list is locked and new entries go to the bottom but because you are fully scrolled down this results in the overview “jumping” to the bottom even when new entries appear, resulting in everything moving upwards.
This is why I wrote in my earlier post that you have to leave a gap from the complete bottom instead of being fully scrolled down, maybe that will help, though not 100% sure but worth trying.
Sure, but given that the whole idea is to have new suspects go to the bottom, it doesn’t make sense to have any of the bottom missing. What’s more, even if one missed out the bottom 4 lines, the act of 6 new people arriving would still push stuff up by 2 lines.
The other issue is, does stuff going to the bottom of the list imply that the default is to have relevant stuff appearing at the top of the list. Or will the same issue simply occur again with new stuff being added at the top.
