When I get targeted, I hear my ship try to target back. Was just running a data site, npcs showed up and poof! My ships gone. No beeps, no target back, nada. The kill report came up before my ship blew up.
It was a data site, I think the npc was sentry. Do they not need to lock on maybe?

I’m guessing you found yourself one of the Covert Research Facilities. Congrats on finding a Ghost Site. These can be very profitable, if you know what you’re doing. They’re also very dangerous, even if you know what you’re doing. I run these whenever I see them, and have lost a few ships to them in the process. But now I’m sitting on about 5 bil worth of Ascendancy BPCs.
Unless you have very good skills, and a very fast ship, you’ve got time to safely hack one can before the rest all explode, and a defense fleet warps in. An exploding can will one shot an unprepared hacking ship, which is where the no warning came from.
I linked the EvE-Uni article below, but here’s the quick version.
1: Have MWD, Data Analyzer, and a Cargo Scanner equipped.
2: As soon as you land in the site, activate MWD and cargo scan all 4 cans.
3: Pick the most profitable can, and go hack it. Keep in mind BPCs don’t have a market value for the cargo scanner. Turn off MWD as you activate the Data Analyzer so you can escape faster.
4: GTFO as fast as you can. The can you hacked won’t explode if you’re there when the hidden timer expires, but the rats have points.

Thanks that explains a lot. Im flying a probe, so rely on my warp. Definitely not tanking explosions and such.

Hmm… My ships only 2-3M. Given its a timed setup I might try hit the next one I see, taking your advice. One and done. Ive found a 20m can in a lvl 1 or 2 site the other day, so these ghost sites should be well worth it
Fortunately, there aren’t any red cans in a ghost site. They’re mostly yellow with a green mixed in. Makes them easy to do in a Probe.
Now if you find a wormhole that leads to nullsec, you can find them out there and they’ll occasionally have an item in them that’s around 200mil on the market. I recommend an Astero and CovOps Cloak if you’re going that route however.

And yes, like others said there are special data sites that can explode and destroy your ship if you do the wrong thing in a fit that cannot withstand the damage.

Hmm thats it though, Im alpha so no cloak. Since I last replied Ive gone deeper into wh space and suddenly buying an astero isnt such a far-fetched idea.
Cloak or no cloak, Ill be out there soon enough

I don’t recommending spending the money on the Astero if you can’t put a CovOps cloak on it. Stick with the cheaper t1 frigs, because you’re going to lose a few exploring wormholes without cloak. You can lose 50 of those Probes you use for the cost of an Astero.
