"Alliance" tournament?

Is it really an “Alliance” tournament if the team is made up of members from multiple alliances?

This km caught my eye as the team was made up members from at least 4 alliances.
Bhaalgorn | M0RE P0WER | Killmail | zKillboard and I’m sure there are a lot more teams like this.

I know the rules state: “Players are free to change alliances until the roster lock date, at which point they will be considered ‘locked in’ to their team.”, but I feel it kinda kills the idea of “Alliance” tournament.

You may want to read up on the mercenary rules.

They were introduced in ATXVII (17) in 2021 and has been like that since. Allowing up to 10 players to join another Alliance in the AT for as long as their current Alliance doesn’t field a team.
In my opinion, it’s great, because it allows people to participate without having to leave behind their regular space-friends just for the sake of playing in the Alliance Tournament.

It’s a point, but he has also one. It isn’t any longer an “Alliance Tournament” but a “Team Tournament”.

I personally would like a pure “Alliance tournament” more, with every starting player needs to be member of the Alliance that is fielding a team. For at least 3 months (to prevent switching corps just for the tournament).

However, I am totally aware that this type of thinking (loyalty, dedication, modesty) doesn’t fit the modern “zeitgeist” any more, where everyone wants to be able to do and get and have everything without any drawbacks or obligations.

I see your point.

However, there also exist quite a few Alliances for the sole purpose of fielding a team in the AT. They don’t play on Tranquility otherwise at all.

What do you make of that?

Personally not a fan of that either, but at the very least they put in some form of effort and sticking to the idea of the tournament. Using it as some sort of gotcha isn’t really an argument.

Very much agreed.

Only alliances existing on TQ for at least 6 months would be allowed to participate and only players that are part of said alliance for at least 3 months are allowed to be part of the AT team. No exceptions.

So players would have to put alts in a special AT alliance to participate?

I guess that works too. I think the mercenary rules are a bit friendlier though to let players group up with others on their main while staying loyal to their own alliance.

Who cares? Watch it or don’t.

No, they don’t “have to” do that. They can form a team within the alliance they are already member of and participate with that team.

It all comes back to the original line: In my mindset, people have to make choices. Choices that matter. Choices that have long-term consequences. Want to be independent, have no responsibilities, no obligations, no loyalty to no one and always play with just those who you like at the moment? Okay, do so. But then you will not be part of an Alliance Tournament team.

Doesn’t mean there couldn’t be other tournaments they could participate in. Racial Tournaments where you have to pick an empire to fly for. Corporation Tournaments limited to corporate teams only. Freestyle Tournaments open for everyone and every team.
I personally believe EVE could make much more use of it’s players’ desire to challenge each other in arena-content to grab for the crown and some prices. But an Alliance Tournament should be restricted to teams from that Alliance only, to find out which Alliance can field the best setup and pilots and not gather a trophy obtained by mercenaries.

They have discouraged the alliance tournament concept ever since Safety. alliance won several consecutive tournaments, leading to intense inter alliance jealousy which nearly led to the cancellation of the tournament. Fortunately, the new team concept is more harmonious and less likely to stir rivalry and toxic animosities. Although this is a competitive game, it’s not really fair to allow one alliance to dominate all the time, and so this helps balance the field for everyone.
