Yeah, I only play in the winter, around Christmas holidays. Also Eve was broken on LInux for a few months, which prevented me from playing.
Do your research before doing any activity in the game.
I also lost ships bc I made mistakes.
But it is okay to take a break.
It would suck even more if I was paying £10 a month for Omega only to have to contend with Alpha accounts with 100m skill points. The fact that so many throw away alt accounts have lower skills is precisely why being Omega eventually pays off.
Gosh…you can make 1.5m in just an hour of mining in a cheap Venture in some safe asteroid belt. Set up a Venture with a Gaussian laser and the whole ship will cost just 300K ISK. It wont mine at the same 200m3 rate as the Mining Laser II…but at a quite respectable 166m3, which will fill your ore hold in about 15 minutes and make 1.5m to 2m ISK per hour. Which is low by mining standards but way better than making that in a day.
Likewise with making money from ratting ( killing pirate npcs ). You can get a free Velator ( or other free frigate ) at any npc station. And for a mere 200K ISK you can equip that Velator with 150mm railguns and two drones and have a nice DPS of over 60…more than enough for some good ratting.
I guess I hit the limit that alphas can have fun in the game. Need to consider investing if I want to keep playing.
Well… Yes.
Alphas were the replacement for the old trial accounts.
You can still have fun with them, but all the bells and whistles require the account to be Omega.

5m sp is the passive gain limit, but you can inject skill points up to nearly 20m as alpha.

So only about 5 months late with this reply but …
That’s where a corp can come in handy when you are new and just starting-out.
Things like basic ships, skill books, and basic attribute implants are pretty much standard fare for ‘freebies’ from many corps.
Example: Signal Cartel offers free T1 exploration ships on their alliance contracts.
I find one of my characters always has a low or empty wallet, because I keep gifting ISK to new members to help them get started 
An amount like 5m to 25m means a lot to the newbros.
