Thank you for that good post. People rarely value the professionality and skill of others. In the last few days I hauled close to 100b in Corp assets from all over HS to trade hubs. Often passing Gheth, Odin, Ohide etc… That was dozens of DST and freighter trips and I didn’t lose one.
Taking into account the time, value risked and need to multibox, 50m per trip sound insanely cheap.
It seems there’s agreement hauling 1B in a freighter is risky, but not whether that’s good or bad for the games economy
It seems the agreement is that bad piloting is risky.
Even an empty freighter has nonzero risk as it can get ganked for fun at a loss. For example if you fly it through Uedama while some gankers are getting bored without scouting ahead you’re taking a big risk by being bad.
That isn’t bad design, it’s good design that all ships can get killed in this game. The bad thing is the choice of the pilot who decides to fly their freighter without using basic precautions like a scout or EVE - Check before you jump!
People who support empty freighters being ganked for fun do not think before they speak and im not going to do it for them. So i guess thread is over.
This is a game about spaceship combat. People kill all sorts of spaceships for fun. I destroy spaceships for fun.
I do not see why people should not kill empty freighters, or any ship for that matter. Any ship should be killable. Some just take more of an effort or cost than others.
Empty freighters cannot be killed for profit in HS space. That’s fine.
But they can be and do get killed. And that’s good too.
Why not?
Considering the margins between production price of a freighter and it’s trade price, industrialists can easily sponsor a fleet of thrashers to “encourage” afk autopiloters to buy a new freighter and still make good profits. Higher demand for freighters will also raise the prices, further increasing their profits.
That would be because freighters are meant to be corp assests that you use for and with a group not on your own
Looks like you’ve found a way to make the killing of empty freighters in HS profitable.
Still, even if it’s not profitable to kill the ship it’s not an issue for the game. It would be an issue if it was not possible to kill the ship at all.
Especially considering most kills in this game aren’t for profit
I don’t understand what you try to tell me.
Freighters don’t need active fittings.
I dare to disagree. Bowheads, Avalanches and Orcas have active fittings and (partially) rigslots and it is enjoyable to play around with what they can do with that. I see little reason for the inconsistency that Freighters, which play in the same price/skilltime category shouldn’t have them. The bowhead and the avalance both show that giving them the option to be actively fit are not breaking the game in any kind and if a capsuleer choses to invest that much time and ISK, he should at least be given some choices to actively react to other players’ attempts to mess around with him.
And since I am a big fan of a K.I.S.S. design, I would prefer if all ships that require SP to fly them, have fitting options from high, med, low and rigslots and enough PG/CPU to play around with different styles and concepts to fly them. Exceptions, especially if completely unnessessary, are not good design in my opinion.
Because an actively tanked freighter would be damn near impossible to gank in high sec. There’s a reason why they don’t have fitting slots for that. Also I’m pretty sure the Avalanche is the only ship in the game with a high slot that is not allowed to fit a cloak.
Plenty of dead Avalanches say otherwise. While I am firmly against the OP’s idea. I actually think freighters gaining mid slots won’t make them ungankable. It’ll require more to gank yes, but 30 cats is a bit on the low end.
The freighters make up for it by having more base EHP. A Charon has 50k more base EHP than an Avalanche, and 118k more base EHP than a Bowhead.
Hell, the Obelisk has almost 200k more base EHP than a Bowhead.
Yes Bowheads are flimsy. The Avalanche is not though. Even an Obelisk with ORE Bulkheads can’t match the EHP of a T2 fit Avalanche. Even if you add a few Multispec shield hardeners, you aren’t going to add a lot of tank. It’ll still not take too much more cats to take them down. Certainly won’t be “damn near impossible”.
Hauling anything is inherently risky.
You’re usually in a fat, slow to align, slow warping tub of a ship with an obvious destination.
That gives folk plenty of time to scan you and set up for a gank.
Being ganked is laughably easy to avoid. It simply involves not being dumb.
If you’re that paranoid, use a 1.5 million EHP command ship to haul small stuff to Jita. That’s the trade-off. You can have a shitload of cargo and decent-ish EHP, or a small cargo hold and a shitload of EHP.
There has to be an option to haul like 50B worth of stuff safely on autopilot. AN OPTION, for example it might be an expensive ship, and you might need an expensive fit, but being able to haul like 50B worth of stuff on autopilot (IN HS) should be achievable.
