There are people who haven’t logged-in in nearly two decades. They don’t even have an avatar because they haven’t logged into the character since before the Character Creator update. I look to see who has a name I wanted and it’s someone from 18 years ago with 0.0 standing and security status, never left the starter corp. Probably never left the station or boarded a ship.
If giving them a serial number isn’t possible send them to Doomheim.
Who cares if they come back after decades. They were gone for a decade. They probably don’t even remember what the character was named. Nothing is stopping them from returning. They would have simply lost a name from decades ago and have to make a new one like they have to make a new face.
The proper way is sending out an email telling people what’s about to happen and to log in with characters if they actually care to keep the name. Like every other MMO that does name purges.
New players or returning players are a good thing for EVE.
I don’t know about you, but I still remember the names I gave my characters in games I played decades ago.
And if my name had been reset that would stop me from returning.
That aside, for characters that have very little history (less than 10M SP, no activity for a decade) I can think CCP could do a name purge. It’s one thing to do a name purge of a character someone was invested in a long time ago, but if they weren’t invested and long gone I don’t see any issues with a name purge.
What about the titan alts we skill inject into, only to safelog them on an r64 belt and login-gank a random miner corps that lives there a decade later?
