I assumed cat were like rats in that if they can get their head through, then they can get the rest
That’s the gist of it. Their shoulders are movable, their chest isn’t larger than their head and their hips are very narrow, so wherever the skull fits in, the rest of the body can follow. So one of the things to do when you’ve got kittens at home, is to check for every little space they can fit thir heads in (that includes under furniture like sofas). Because sooner than later, kitties will find them and hide in the weirdest places as they explore the house.
A cat’s collar bone is not connected to any other bone in its body. The forelimbs are attached to the shoulder by free-floating clavicle bones, which allows them to pass their body through any space into which they can fit their heads. 
This cat wasn’t even trying!
