So I’ve spent about 4 hours or so in the game last couple of days and my goals are pretty chill regarding what I want from EVE. A place to hangout in space, do some mining with youtube on or something. Nothing heavy (or at least not yet).
I think so far 3 or 4 random people have messaged. 1 of them was quite rude when they found out i’m casual and only plan to play an hour or two a night. Another straightaway just sent me 4 million ISK (100% to make me feel guilty if I said no to their offer) and then spammed me with pre made recruitment text and a discord link. Didnt reply when I had an actual question though.
Are there any folks out there who have always stayed solo? With my current goals is it worth even joining one yet? I’m happy enough and know the tricks of not moving any stuff to peoples station, not flying what I can’t afford stuff. Wasn’t expecting the recruitment spam to be so…aggressive this early.
Eve is a multiplayer game, the bigger the crew you have the easier it is to do stuff.
Having said that there’s plenty of folk who are in NPC or personal corps happily playing the game.
Personally I think you’ll get more out of EvE, even as a filthy casual, if you join some corp/alliance which has structures, and daily or weekly fleets etc.
As you are new to the game I’d recommend joining Eve University, they play in all areas of the game and do all types of content, even if you’re just doing a bit of mining for a few hours a week, you’ll at least be in a fleet with boosts etc. and there’ll be some kind of ore buyback program and opportunities to learn about industry, pvp, pve etc. if you want to take them. They also run classes in all types of EvE gameplay and will give you free ships to get started.
You could also consider joining one of the big Nullsec alliances, I recall some youtuber did a video series on joining Brave, and all the free stuff and help they got, seemed a good way to learn the game.
In short there’s nothing stopping you playing the game solo, but you will almost certainly have a better time if you join up with someone.
What exactly do you want from the corp and provide in return?
Former: social interaction, PvE ops, PvP ops, mining ops (boost and buyback), manufacturing, hauling help, training / guidance / learning, and so on?
Latter: similar fashion, what exactly you plan to give to the corp, and if nothing really that might also be okay to some types of corps but state it clearly.
Joining a corp here you need to either find other players you know, face to face, in real life, or make your own corp.
A large problem here with corps ( guilds in other games ) are the pyramid scams and spies. I don’t bother guild building anymore, but I would not attempt it here with the related issues. One of the largest guilds I made was in Guild Wars Reforged ( original game ).
That was our last group photo together. Trying to get everyone online and into the guildhall was a major undertaking. Players joined guilds in those games for completely different reason. None of those reasons were to make virtual currency ( gold & platinum ). Most were their for titles.
I never had to bribe people to join, many I met as my Baron Velspa in the tutorial section and I just gave them a hand understanding the game in the tutorial section. By the time we got through the tutorial together, they were impressed enough to join The Imaginary Friends.
My advice to those who want to start a corp/guild is to help out whenever and where you can. Maybe set a permanent character in Exordium to meet and greet people.
Pyramid scams are found in every day life, also called MLM Mult-Level-Marketing. They convince members to recruit others and charge them a start up fee, a percentage of this free is pass up the pyramid to the top. It makes the members at the top rich while those at the bottom starve. Powered by the desire to make more ISK fast, the corporation will quickly grow in membership depending on the quota.
For example; you pay the recruiter a 1000 membership free to start and the you find 4 others charging them the same price and pass only 20% up to the recruiter, now you have 3600 plus the 20% owed by the 16 that get recruited below you 16 x 400 = 6400. On paper it sounds like a great deal, where you keep getting fed a constant stream of membership fees by the others below you.
Unlike other online games they don’t block a lot of common scams in the game. Ponzi scam of doubling ISK is one such example; I tell a person I can invest their ISK and give them double in 24 hours. Then I continue to collect ISK in this manner. I hand over twice the amount 24 hours later to the first person. Then they get greedy and hand over even more ISK to be doubled. The scam falls apart when you have everyone wanting their money back. This and other scams are listed here on the wiki.
The only ones that concern FC are the ones listed under “Forbidden/bannable actions” those are the ones that hurt FC’s wallet and not just the players. Otherwise scamming is permitted in this game, so be very careful.
