Discussion Of The Implications Of Niarja's Invasion

Caldari space is where the Ravens get made.

In order for Jita to be abandoned as a universal hub, it would have to be cutoff. Not partially, as was done with Niarja, but fully – it would have to be severed, as it were, either by flipping to the Trigs itself, or by cutting off hisec links between the Empires in general. How this cutting off were to be done, of course, would impact what would happen next. But unless Jita is cut off from hisec links to other empires, it will very likely remain the hub, regardless of being located ā€œat one end of the lineā€, so to speak, because of inertia, sunk cost fallacy, the pain in the ass factor of moving, and related ā€œestablished centreā€ reasons (among them being that Hek, the likeliest ā€œmiddle of the lineā€ candidate given current gate routes, is in a string of 0.5 systems which makes it particularly disfavored as a trading hub). In order for Jita to be abandoned as Eve’s de facto central hub, it would have to be forced on the players – that is, hard forced.

If Jita were to flip to the Trigs, while the Kassigainen link remained open, it would seem likely that the de facto hub would simply decamp to a closeby system in Caldari space, like Sobaseki or Perimeter or something like that. Again, inertia and familiarity factors will weigh large here.

If the Kassigainen link were to be severed, however, perhaps coupled with the link between Matari and Gallente space being severed as well, then you would see some significant changes. While the ultimate choices of players are always hard to predict accurately in advance, it seems based on prior history of behaviors that the likeliest outcome would be a mass transfer of activity to Caldari space, where many (most?) players have their assets concentrated, and at least a base, an alt or two, or some kind of significant foothold under the current regime. It’s possible that local tradehubs could benefit from this kind of ā€œglobal severingā€ as well, but again based on prior behavior in Eve, as well as other MMOs, the overwhelming tendency of players is to find one center in which to congregate, and since Caldari space is currently that center (and not just Jita … it’s all of ā€œlower Caldariā€ space really), it seems likely to me that this would remain the de facto center after such a severing, and that the game would end up even more clustered there than it is now, ironically.

Of course, more radical surgery could be done. That is, the Trigs ,or some other mechanism, could also do more radical violence to the routings that currently exist inside lower Caldari space, severing many of them and making Caldari space itself a patchwork of small hisec islands isolated from each other by lawless 0.0 space. This would again be a hard forcing of player behavior that would be the kind of thing I would look to see in order to predict that players would actually meaningfully emigrate from Caldari space in significant numbers.

Of course that would make for a radically different game. That isn’t necessarily bad. It has to be remembered that CCP have done very substantial and impactful changes to routing previously, both in the early game (superhighways, and Yulai DED as the main hub), and then later with the introduction of FW (which created the difference in travel between allied and opposed empires, which is now itself being disrupted). Change is always needed at some point to keep things from becoming stale, and it will be interesting to see how this plays itself out.

Oh good. Good. Good.

Thanks for keeping me apprised of this awesome change, Lucas!

No it’s not. It’s when you make rewards that much harder to get and make them more valuable that players stay.

Nobody plays this game for the daily freebies CCP hands out.

If anything, reward is already relatively easy to get in EVE, last thing this game needs is making it even more easy.

The point I was making (if you read BOTH sentences) was that CCP and null keep trying to make HS something it is not. A car will not be an airplane even though people have tried and HS will not be forming any alliances like null even though CCP and null have tried (poorly).

If CCP wanted High Sec to be neon green and all Caracals turn into elephants they could do it tomorrow.

Just please stop with this ā€œCCP wantsā€

If CCP knew what they wanted, theyd have done it.

You’ve been here long enough (well I think you have) to know that CCP has constantly tried to entice players into Corps and move to Low or Null Sec.

Reason is because that’s where large Fleet battles happen which get’s publicized by gaming news sites thus giving CCP free advertisement.

And that’s what CCP want’s…

I agree on principle that would be a sound business move.

But how come in all the years this has been the case have they been unable to come up with an actual solid compelling reason for either

  1. players who enjoy the freedom the game offers to want to work for someone in null

  2. a reason for nulloperators to want to have such people in their organisation

If they feel that simply changing the ground people are standing on into lava will do it, they should just do it. Doing it piecemeal doesn’t encourage immigration.

Because what they’re doing now is making little changes spread out over a long time.

If they just completely changed it all overnight, there would be a mass exodus from this game.

Because they think like gamers instead of game owners. Or I should say thought. Now there’s a corporate board doing all the thinking. And the stuff you see now is nothing compared to when the dam breaks. I can pretty much guarantee they’re going to FO76 this game soon enough.

I guess.

Still Id rather they just got it over with. Im guessing the Microtransactions Superwave will hit around the mid point of the Final Transfer of Power.

My god Mike, youve convinced me EvE is dying.

Yeah, I think I just came around to that thinking.

Dang.

There’s a sentence I never thought I’d see in here.

I didn’t say Eve was dying, it’s just been slowly changing over time to where it’s now no longer the same game that it was back when I first started playing.

Fine, if I must clarify: the EvE I enjoy playing and have done for years is dying and what will replace it will not be the same game.

Yeah. But that’s how people interpret what you are pointing out. And for good reason. It is dying…for them.

The coming changes will finally get them off their complacent null sec asses and into a new game.

Edit: Jesus I’m typing slow tonight. I keep looking like I’m plagiarizing the posts above mine. But I’m not. Really. Just being fuzzy brained here at 6:15 local time.

Yeah, way too many changes have been done to this game over the years. I highly doubt CCP will ever be able to get the same log-in numbers again like they had from 2008 to 2012.

Well not from us. That’s for sure.

But PA knows how to cater to a certain demographic and has a huge marketing dept with a lot of experience in MMOs behind them. I’m guessing that for every bittervet that quits, there’ll be 10 new bros that love the direction the game will be heading in shortly.

PA has been following the monetization script to a T. First you break the game. Then you sell the fix back to the customers at a dollar or two a pop.

Want to shortcut your freighter through an occupied system? Buy a one system immunity. Only $25 for a ten pack. Mining too slow? Booster packs are on sale this week. Used up all your jump clones? Only two bucks per if you buy right now.

People are making huge drama over this issue.

Amarr to Jita is not 50 jumps away. There is a shorter way and perfectly safe.

People just need to play together (I know its an MMO, we shouldnt play together and organize).

lol, if that happens then Eve will truly be dead…

Well, the Eve that we all know.

The road is one of the quickest ways to get around all 4 empires through HS only (5 if you count Ammatar… sorry, Khanid, you’re not on the road. ;_;), though. With or without hubs on it or close to it.

This isn’t just about trade, it’s about ease of movement (not moment… jeez… posting in the morning…) in HS.
