Diversity survey concerns

Hi bud. Just because you don’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not an issue. I, a white woman living in the Southwest, rarely see any instances of racism against black people, so I can easily and truthfully say that I just don’t see it. The Black population in my state is like under 3%, and I’m not the target population. That doesn’t mean it’s not an issue elsewhere or on the whole.

eta: Gonna chime in to echo @Dylana_Aivo’s sentiments. I’ve been harassed in EVE and have witnessed and heard about a lot of harassment of other women. I was lucky to fall in with a group of guys who were pretty protective of me, so people would get chided if they said awful stuff to me in comms or in-game. Nowadays I can stand up for myself without fear of repercussion. My corp has my back and I believe the alliance does, too, when it comes down to it. Goons, surprisingly, have historically been pretty good* about making fun of dudes who try to clown on women until they feel small and stupid and ashamed of their awful comments. Shame is a useful learning tool sometimes, as it turns out. But that hasn’t stopped the guy who said some very weird rapey stuff to a woman I know at a meet-up, or the guy who threatened to rape another woman I know because she kept killing him in-game, or the guy who said I sounded like I’d “f***ed thousands of Mexicans” apropos of nothing, or the guy who threatened to disappear me and my son next time we entered his country, which we visited often to see family. These are but a handful of many, many examples. If the Eve girl discord got together and catalogued all of the things we’ve experienced, the document would be dozens if not hundreds of pages.

My toddler has object permanence down and knows that things exist if he can’t see them. Why don’t you, @Spacetramp_Drago?

(* - As always, there are exceptions. Major, recent ones come to mind, but it’s improving all the time.)

Since you cannot see anyone who is behind the ships on your overview… the entire subject is a waste of time.

Literally being brought up, probably just to increase their ESG corporate score. BET!

Within New Eden I feel that I can leave my personal life out of Eve Online and enjoy my game time.

The only joke I can’t take here is you.

Rolls eyes. That statement wasn’t about you (unless you do actually prefer candy crush?) You obviously enjoy eve. You’re not the average female gamer. But sure, be offended by the reality of where most female gamers are at I guess?

Dudes have literally no idea what it’s like to not be catered to, and the second a company suggests they’re interested in reaching out to other demographics, they lose their minds. It’s wild.

This post got a bit derailed, firstly
The survey said nothing about female harassment, it is about “inclusivity” so that means ticking boxes to look virtuous
Unfortunately inclusiveness generally results in a reduction to the assistance that women get and the focus goes to people who identify as everything else
So if your concerned about harassment, and want to do something about it, make sure to record the posts, screenshot them, and report them to CCP, post on the forums to get visibility, visibility is key to getting it sorted, create your own posts and keep people informed

But complaining on the forums with no specific examples, and not having reported it, makes no sense, what are you expecting us to do? report it to the people who can do something about it, move to a corp that isnt so toxic, we have women in our corp and dont see any of these problems

The example from destiny above have words and actions in that would get someone banned, that says to me it wasnt reported, do you see the problem here?

We were all so confused and hysterical.

No, it really isn’t. As said before, harassment against females is often targeted at players who are assumed to be female based only on their character’s portrait, because this game has plenty of people on the left side of the intelligence spectrum curve, just like real life does.

You can’t ignore this problem just because we can’t tell whether the recipients of harassment are male or female through the in-game chat feature. In crime, what’s important is the element of intent, and not the actual outcome (at least in places with a working criminal justice system). If you’re trying to assassinate someone in real life, you can’t say that what you did wasn’t murder because you intended to kill John, but ended up killing someone who turned out to be Bob instead, therefore it was an accident and you shouldn’t be held liable for murder. The system just doesn’t work that way. The punishment would be exactly the same regardless of whether John or Bob dies.

The survey said nothing about female harassment

The womens’ version most certainly did. It specifically asked us if we’d ever been harassed while playing Eve, and had an input box in which we were asked to describe any harassment we wished to share with CCP.

e: This is actually a hilarious demonstration of something I brought up in my earlier post - you’re not the target demographic, so you literally don’t see it and assume it didn’t happen. QED.

I was looking for a guild in Classic a while ago, asking around on an obvious male Orc with an obvious male name. Someone messaged:

Weirdo: “Are you a girl?”
Me: “Does that matter?”
Weirdo: “To me it does”

Part of a large guild too.

I’ve been playing multiplayer games since I was a little kid. This doesn’t affect me. I know that these people are impotent with regard to being able to project any sort of influence over me, whether inside the game or outside of it. However, that’s not necessarily how other people getting harassed might feel. It’s their choice how to respond to harassment. And some of them make the choice to simply quit instead of dealing with the support system.

Also, I don’t believe in reporting. I believe in public exposure and shaming, which is something that CCP doesn’t allow. As such, I simply ignore these events. I might record some rage if it’s good content, but otherwise I don’t pay attention to it. Someone saying they’ll ■■■■ me to death after I blow up their hauler is just Tuesday.

Oh yeah, WoW is full of this stuff too. I remember only playing male avatars, but had friends with female ones, and they occasionally received some creepy interactions, just because of that.

There’s a lot of socially-inept and/or sub-intelligent people out there.

And if we assume the people who had issue with the survey were all men… that means the issues people had with the survey were based on the male version. If the survey was about how to deal with harassment to create a less toxic environment, CCP wouldn’t see this type of negative response.

To be honest, you sound a bit confused and hysterical. Taking statements out of context and then trying to discredit what I had to say on the topic with a single word.

Which makes me wonder. Are your complaints of harassment legitimate? Or are you just engaging in an elevated discourse because you’re overly combative?

Yep, thanks for womensplaining, i couldn’t see it, but i totally do now

That may be sarcasm, but it relates to an important point. People increasingly occupy ever more realistic virtual worlds in which they can ‘be’ whatever they like. Of course you’ll get those who argue ’ but you’re not ‘really’ a purple and blue 70 foot tall furry panda '. To which I’d respond that the gap between ‘real’ and virtual or imagined worlds decreases by the day. Give it another 20-30 years and we’ll have so integrated with technology and spend so much of our time in virtual worlds that you may well be able to ‘be’ an 800mm Repeating Cannon II all day long and people who tried to tie everything down to archaic notions of ‘reality’ will be seen as stone age primitives with zero imagination.

The real world is also trending towards that hellscape unfortunately, we already have grown men identifying as kids and what not

Yes they are a minority but eventually saying literally anything about how dumb it is will be considered phobic

Me : I’m an imaginary character in the year 23,000.

Strange how people in PvP games never ask if you’ve had 387 kills in RL or can snipe someone from 2 miles away. I mean, in Medal Of Honour : Allied Assault I charged up a French beach and must have shot 400 Germans yet there’s no arrest warrant out for me.
