DNI L4 Fit Advice Requested

Hello All,

Looking for advice on this DNI fit I put together for L4 missions. Zero experience with L4’s. Transitioning from L3’s in a Myrmidon and would kind of like to be somewhat active with guns as opposed to straight drone boat. Looking at shield tank here but open to all suggestions. Some things I can Tech II, some I can’t - Tech II drones & sentries in particular, I don’t have trained up yet so would probably just be throwing Fed Navy’s around. And still working toward the Tech II turrets. Thanks for any help and apologies in advance if this seems horrible…

One thing I can tell you, unless you’re using Augmented drones, don’t use Gallente drones for PVE with the exception of sentries. Despite having the highest base damage, because the way NPC resists are setup, Caldari drones ALWAYS ended up doing more actual damage to NPCs where you would think Gallente drones would shine. (Serpentis, Guristas, Caldari Navy, Gallente Navy) Plus Caldari drones are faster, track better, and have the best shields.

Use Minmatar drones against Angels and Minmater Navy, and Amarr Drones against Blood Raiders, Sansha’s Nation, and Amarr Navy.

OK Sarah Olson, thank you for the tip. :+1:

By the looks of your fit, I’m going to go out on a limb and say you aren’t ready to jump into a battleship just yet, given the fact that you need a reactor control unit to fit what, your guns and a miniscule buffer tank?

Using your fit in PYFA:

Which would imply that you do not have the ‘magic fourteen’ trained;

https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/The_Magic_14

Or, you need to train weapon upgrades to a much, much higher level.

I’m not trying to be dissuasive, just don’t want you to loose what is an expensive ship for newer players. I will upload some suggestions shortly anyway, just wanted to post this before you lost everything you have worked for.

Also, using a cap relay with a shield tank is asking for trouble, especially a buffer tank like yours as it reduces shield capacity.

Makes sense Ira, thanks - yeah my skills are all over the place for sure…

So here are two suggestions for the DNI. Given that you want to be more active with guns you will not be drone sniping, so no need to fit drone links. There is tight fighting but I have designed these to be able to be fit by a zero-day newbro in terms of resources. I do not recommend going into L4’s with a 600m hull if this is you (I would recommend putting it off until you have the powergrid to fit a full rack of 350’s, a t2 large armour rep, and a 500mn mwd)

Is there any reason you are looking at shield tanking? - Most Gallente pve boats have great bonuses to armour reps. I like armour tanking because an unbonused large armour rep gives you tanking power somewhere between a large shield booster (not quite enough unless you are careful) and an xl shield booster (very hungry on cap), and allows the use of damage application mods (Caldari and Minmatar shield boats don’t have this issue as they have more mid slots and can be flexible in terms of tank/application modules)

Do not be fooled by the extra 200 DPS on the shield fit one though, because the armour tank can apply it better to smaller targets, it additionally has better staying power through its heftier and longer lasting tank (and a better cap recharge too (+14.4 vs +16.4 GJ/s).

You can see the damage application in the graph below:

I did not include a target profile for a battlecruiser because both ended up doing roughly equivalent damage. You can see however that the armour fit is better at applying damage to cruisers. In L4’s, a lot of the targets are cruisers, and if you do not find a way to apply damage to them, you will be up against them for a long time (and the quicker you kill things the less you need to tank)

If you are willing to move over to armour and want to focus on turrets, I would recommend the Megathron Navy Issue. The thing is a beast, and when fitted as below, it has a nice tank, is fairly agile, and comes in at around the same price as the DNI fits (In fact a little bit cheaper - and you get more out of it). The idea behind it is to keep your afterburner going and orbit a structure at 45 km and just blast all the NPC’s trailing behind you.

Here you can see it compared to the armour fit DNI:

With better application to cruiser and below targets than a shield fit DNI, and better application passed 40km than an armour fit DNI (where you would be orbiting), and applies more damage to battlecruisers and above, the MNI is, in my opinion, superior in regards to what you are looking at doing.

There is also enough CPU remaining that you can utilize the utility high slot - you could put a tractor beam or even a drone link augmentor to extend your drone damage beyond 60km.

My only criticism against the MNI is that you are paying an extra 200m compared to the megathron hull for an extra 100 DPS (from the extra drone bandwidth allowing an additional heavy - turret DPS remains the same - so if you are focusing on turrets, the vanilla megathron may be the better (and cheaper) option), when, for that again you get about 25% more tank for longer, an extra 200 DPS (afforded by both the extra drone bandwidth and more turret damage), and dead stop webifiers with a vindicator (which, if you want you can also fit with a shield tank - but again, I feel armour is better because you take advantage of the web bonus)

(All DPS stats are quoted with 425 mm prototype gauss gun’s with fed navy antimatter)

Anyway, I hope this helped.

Wow thanks for putting in this work Ira, very much appreciated!

Armor tank is fine, I armor tank the Myrmidon, works great. Just felt like the low slots were kind of shut off by the DDA’s and the mag stabs that seemed necessary to get the DPS to where it’s supposed to be… and I am sort of associating armor tanking with low slot usage… inexperience showing there as well for sure… I don’t PVP and have made the money I have through arbitrage hauling in a Viator mostly, so… I don’t have a lot of experience fitting combat hulls.

Just took a peek and my magic 14 are not bad but was missing Cap Systems Operation entirely… everything else no lower than IV and a few V there… the turret skills are not great with large hybrid turret only training through IV now… Weapon Upgrades is also at IV…

Will definitely look at the Mega/MNI… much better suited to the style I would like to have - thank you for that analysis! And that is basically how I fly the Mrym anyway, AB always on and orbit while gunning with drones out… so it seems like a natural progression. Also have a very, (very) long-range goal to eventually try incursion fleets and the Vindi is one of the preferred platforms from what I have read, so… going Mega/MNI seems to make a lot more sense with that in mind also… I know incursion fits are a much different animal but just speaking from the standpoint of familiarity with the platform…

Thanks so much Ira!
