I’ve been doing a bit of hauling in high sec, and in an effort to protect my ship, I decided to put an ECM in my empty mid slot. I was hoping it was a passive module, but since it needs to be activated, I decided to turn it on when I was approaching a gate camp. It started flashing, and didn’t seem to do anything at that gate, but it got me wondering if I could get myself in trouble with that item. Any advice? I just want to protect myself as a carebear for now.
ECM Burst? Yes.
There are two types of ECM modules. Targeted ECM modules and ECM burst modules. I assume you’re talking about the ECM burst module as it is a way to possibly break all locks around you.
Know that in HS space activating any module against another player leads to a criminal timer if there is no legal basis to attack that player. This means if you turn on your ECM burst against hostile players and another player just happens to also be within range of you, you get a criminal timer and CONCORD will come destroy your ship.
For this reason I do believe you need to turn off your safeties in HS in order to be able to use an ECM burst module.
Generally it’s not a good idea to use ECM burst modules on your hauling ships.
In HS it makes you criminal. And outside HS it turns off the nullification module you use on your hauler to ignore bubbles.
Agreed. In highsec, especially near a gate, players can appear at any time and will be within range of your ECM burst, even if you only intended to use it for the gate campers.
Maybe try targeted ECM. That could help. Otherwise, maybe use another form of ecm or only use it when away from a very public area.
Good luck!
