I just lost a dual rep tank Astero to a Heron. I have only been playing for a few months and I thought I was finally ready to gank an explorer in Nullsec. Joke was on me… the guy lit me up like the fourth of July.
Not sure what I did wrong other than jump the wrong guy. He said he knew I was in the system and was baiting me. He had fitted it for full pvp. He didn’t even have a probe launcher fit lol.
Well, this is an expensive lesson. Not sure hat the lesson is other than I am not ready for pvp.
I really disagree with this. On a T1 frigate (and even then not all of them, like the Merlin), sure, but on most ships for solo, it’s a requirement in my eyes.
That my brain did the human thing and didn’t properly take in the word rep in the middle of dual rep tank in the post is probably what to tell me.
Though without clarification from OP we won’t know which way was right.
His missiles blew through me so fast. I mean, I had all my armor stuff going and it was not even close to saving me.
I tackled him while he was hacking a site thinking… oh yeah… my first kill!
Well little did I know he was waiting for me and was totally fitted for combat… not sure what I could have done differently outside of just not engaging or perhaps cutting combat as soon as I saw the damage coming in and thro those ecm drones out.
A Heron has 3 weapons and no damage bonus. Even overheated and with polarized weapons, he might have been pushing 150 DPS, and you shouldn’t have melted, at the very least.
He did say his skills were really trained up and he felt that had a lot to do with it. I dunno… I feel like I def did something wrong but had too much adrenaline going to tell you what it was. Maybe I ran out of cap and was not paying attn?
Breaking your tank with that setup, while you still have cap charges to use, is a mathematical impossibility. That setup can’t be doing more than about 120 DPS with good skills.
Can someone run the numbers in a fitting tool?
How many charges did you start the fight with, and how many got destroyed/dropped in the kill mail?
That fit is fairly strong and should have won out against (most) engagements with a Heron (as long as you know what you were doing).
Given how you talked about the engagement, I’d reckon that you simply just right click > approached the Heron, sat on him at zero (which you should never do) and then just ate all the DPS he was spitting out at you.
The Heron could have come fitted with either (most likely) Blasters or (less likely) Rockets (or both!) all three of which would have eaten you up if you were just sitting still and not moving.
The loss here, I’d attribute more to pilot inexperience than anything else. But props to you for going out of your way and trying something different.
