Faction Standings for Trader

My trader has standings of 1.8 with Minmatar and wants to go higher, so he started doing hauling missions with the intent of getting a storyline mission to raise this standing. However, just noticed his Amarr standing is -1.6, which he wants to raise before it gets to -2.

Looking to the internet for answers: Some people say do Storyline missions. Others say avoid Storyline. Eve University gives complicated math with undefined terms that I cannot fathom.

I need some general advice for my goal of having high standing with 2 factions and nothing less than -1.9 for any of the main 4 factions. Also, I have specific questions:

  1. If I do a Storyline mission for 1 faction and gain 0.5 standing, my standing loss for the opposing faction will be less than 0.5, right? Said another way, the indirect effect on opposing factions is always less than the direct effect with the faction that gave the mission, right? (Assuming I’m not killing faction ships, structures during the mission.)
  2. I read some people saying to raise your standing by doing missions, but avoid the Storyline missions. I thought the whole point of doing missions to raise standings was to get to the Storyline. I don’t see any increase faction standing after doing 12 missions. So what are they talking about? Thanks!

Avoid storylines. You wanna do missions for access to the epic arcs. For minmatar that is brutor tribe. At 5.00 effective you will have access permanently to the epic arc for them (as long as you dont go below -2.00 modified with the faction)

Rinse and repeat for Expert Distribution, impetus and ministry of internal order for caldari, gallente and amarr respectively.

Train your social skills if you havent
Social - increases standings per level

Connections - modifies standings (ie with level 5, if your base standing is 3.75 your modified will be 5.00, hence access to arcs)

Diplomacy - modifies negative standings up to 0.00

You can do the career agents for amarr to fix their standings (they can only be done once however).

Do I understand you correctly? Do missions for Brutor Tribe to raise corp standings to 5, then do epic arc to raise Minmatar standings?

Also, if I do storyline missions, is it a net zero, or do I gain a little more with one side than I lose with the other, for a slight net positive?

You might gain or lose more depending on your actions.

Yes doing missions for brutor tribe gives you access to the epic arc once your standings are 5.00

You can do storylines as long as you avoid the ones against the other empire factions

So there is this thing called derived standings. So if you do a storyline mission against amarr. It wont be just their standings go down, but some of their friends too like caldari

I very much appreciate the help. I do want to nail down this one point more precisely, regarding faction standings and corp standings:

Doing missions for the corp will raise corp standings while not affecting the faction standings. And doing the epic arc will raise the faction standings while not hurting opposing factions. Do I have that right?

Correct.

Regular missions do nothing for faction only corp. And epic arcs will give minimal loss compared to storylines, but if you rotate every 3 months youll be ok

Thanks!
And when you say “You can do storylines as long as you avoid the ones against the other empire factions” you are saying that I can gain faction standings while doing storylines for a net gain (gain more with Minmatar than I lose with Amarr) if I do a storyline that doesn’t involve killing Amarr ships buildings, etc or those of their friends). Do I have that right? Sorry if I’m nitpicking. Just want to be crystal.

Yes, you can see in the mission log who you are up against by the logo. If its any empire, just decline the storyline.

Also, for trading, effective standings dont count, only base, so while effective 5.00 will get you the arcs, broker fees are based on unmodified standings.

So if you want to trade at rens, standings for min and brutor are both needed.

So you could grind to 5.00 and still be able do the arc without connections skill

Gaining faction standings fast - EVE University Wiki has some on this topic

The Sisters of Eve epic arc (or whatever it’s called) gives a pretty massive boost. I tanked my Gallente standings fighting in Caldari faction war years ago and the epic arc + 2 storyline missions fixed them enough I was able to switch to Gallente. I don’t know what your combat skills are like, but I ran all the SOE missions in an Ishkur without any problem. You can do it again after waiting 90 days.

Also Important: There’s skills boosting and improving your standings. Especially Social, Connections, and Diplomacy help a lot.

Ive mentioned that already but thanks again

Indeed
