What sort of stupidery is this?
I see where the confusion comes from. There is no “before free to play” in EvE. The game is and has been since 2003 a subscription based game, and often came with a week or so free time to try it out. That the publisher now releases stuff like expert systems and temporary skills is nothing more than catering to newer players who know these systems from other games with a radically different monetization scheme. It’s easy extra cash and may lead to new subs.
The “Free to Play” here is a demo, even one that is ridiculously generous (sp limit but no game time limit), and thankfully also one that does not give anyone the capability to fly and use just anything by throwing sufficient amounts of money at it. Many would agree that games with such monetizing schemes do indeed offer an unfair advantage and do not create an equal playing field. On the contrary, ccp is very straightforward about the difference between alpha and omega. The business model hasn’t substantially changed.
Everyone starts on the same basis in EvE, except of course those players who come here with the illusion that “free to play” is not meant as “free demo”. A subscription is a fair system. Any other system leads to paying for an advantage once a game becomes more than a “free to play” demo. EvE players like fair game access, while trying to play as unfairly as possible in New Eden.
In EvE it’s even possible to work your way up to omega from alpha without spending a dime/cent. Tough, but possible. After that it is entirely possible to run omega accounts without spending any money, if you pay with time and have the skill.
Bro, it’s free to play, not free to prey.
