If you’re thinking brown gravy, it’s not that. The gravy is made with sausage crumbles, flour, and milk. For those unfamiliar with the cuisine of the Southern United States, this is “biscuits and gravy” (and it’s delicious, btw).

I actually like beans on toast, though I prefer mine with a fried egg. And yeah, biscuits and gravy won’t win awards for presentation, but trust me—it’s damn tasty.

I’ve introduced several Brits and Aussies to the delicacy, and they’ve all loved it. A couple of them even wanted to know how to make it themselves.

The only way to beat beans on toast is beans with the small sausages in with them (they come with them in the tin)

If balls are your thing, go for it. But there are much nicer Southern savories:

  • Chicken and waffles
  • Sweet potato pie
  • Collard greens and fatback
  • Fried green tomatoes
  • Deep-fried catfish
  • Pulled pork
  • Carolina slaw
