Offtopic here: there was guy from Goonswarm with his “Never not mega” and such. I cannot remember his nickname. Haven’t seen him for a while.
Anyone knows if he is ok?

if you ensure boundaries by law then you’ll need penalization for crossing it too. World will be a mess when some group would penalize acting that they think it offend them. Freedom of speech means, we can talk the problems not penalize without talking.
Baltec1 never made the jump to the new new forums.
He is/was. Left goons after WWB.
Please, tell me what’s wrong.
As Voltaire said “I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend - "
Ah stuff it. If you insult someone to their face trying to provoke a reaction I’ll grab the popcorn when the knuckledusters come out.
What I said applied to the whole world, not just to the US.
Anyhow, I’m a goner for now.
Sure there are forms of harrsament laws and laws against libel. What you don’t hear is how seldom those laws are used. or successfully prosecuted.
And in all cases it takes more than saying a single word. I can’t wrap my mind around the idea that I could come to one’ of you guiys countries, encounter a racist person who merely sees my skin color and BLAM he goes to jail or gets a citation for that. I’m not a lawyer (in that country or any other) but I’d probably speak in that person’s defense in the case of a trial. No I don’t like being insulted but the day I think the government should punish someone for simply being stupid is the same day pig sprout wings.
It kind of sheds light on how some people here can be so intensely sensative to typed words in a way that I (a person not just from the U.S., but from Texas) find mystifying. We cuss each other out for sport here. But talking plain to people might be illegal where some of you are from depending on who gets their feelings hurt? We have a game in my culture called “The Dozens” that might will get me a life sentence lol.
Hell, my best buddy is a white guy who I always call the ‘C’ word ( a derogatory term for white folks). He always responds with “erm, we prefer the term Saltine Americans good sir” and we have a good laugh about it. No going to jail involved…
When you cannot talk without offending others then maybe you shouldn’t talk. I have yet to see the one who madly raging and insulting others is the one who was also right. Fact rather seems to be that even when a madman speaks the truth then nobody will listen anyway.
Also when you insult the judge or the jury in your court, does it then not have consequences?
Well that could bring you into dispute with existing laws in western countries. Threatening someone, lying for the reason of fraud, attacking someones honor can make you subject to penalties in many states.
And even if what you do doesn’t fall under any legislation, if you affect someone negatively on purpose, you somewhat waive any claim to be treated any better. So it will work until you meet someone who doesn’t nag about what you did, but let you feel that there is always someone meaner, harder and more badass in this world.
Let’s not get into those extremes though.
The interesting case will be to separate where someone makes your behaviour their business without good reason and where it is the other way around.
I agree unless their action reasonably affects others in a bad way. What exactly that means should be discussed on a case by case base and I’m no friend of easily limiting anyones freedom, but one persons freedom should not destroy another ones.
I assume you are from the US? If so, I guess the specific situation might lead to weird scenarios like this. Laws are too complicated for people to understand your judicial system is a bit fked if I may say so. It’s more about having money than being right and with everyone being afraid of doing some big mistake, people might prefer to sit on their hands unless it is 100% clear that someone broke the law.

He was PL actually
Sorry I missed your post. I don’t know him, but what you said there makes sense. I mean if there wasn’t at least a tiny bit of things getting better, people would probably riot all day long.
My stand against the current economic system is not that it is completely wrong in all ways (despite there being a little danger of things escalating horribly, but let’s hope they don’t), but that it is creating much less wealth for the average person than possible, much less progress. Capitalism used to be a good step 200 years ago, but now it is time for something more reasonable.
bill c 16 in Canada. Gender pronouns for sexual minorities. Where is the freedom of speech in that when you do not agree with that change? If I don’t agree with all “new” sexes because I think there is only 2 why should I be penalized for such thinking? Not to mention there is a language change in the process, with make up pronouns.
See, that’s the thing. Here we can do this, but we don’t have to. We have the freedom to choose if we want to press charges or if we want to let it slide. We have a choice and it means freedom to us.
I don’t know what this is. Are you saying there are people living in Canada who prefer to be called “it” instead of “he” and “she”?
I agree and in reality the treshold to go to prison is rather high here. As long as it counts as libel, you’ll get away with paying a fine, but if they see that you incite hatred and breach the peace, there is some chance for repeat offenders to go to jail.
A more realistic scenario is what happens when you harass someone and they reply with physical violence to you breaching the peace. That’s something many judges in my country would count as a reasonable response of a normal person. It always depends. Say, you call me an idiot and I punch you in the throat: judge will say I did wrong. Say, you continously harass me in worse ways with words and I punch you: judge will say, you deserved it
Nah lol, we do it all the time, especially amongst friends. Calling your friends bad words is a show of affection. Your friends though, not strangers. It’s a pretty simple line. Don’t know someone: don’t call them names less you want to face consequences. Know someone: call them names, less you want them to think you don’t like them.
I didn’t know either, but browsing youtube I found an interview with Jordan Peterson, clinical psychologist.
It would be more like Ze, Zhe, there is a whole tablet about those pronouns.
It says nowhere, that you get penalized for not agreeing with pronouns or for your thoughts at all.
In most newer anti-discrimination legislation the lawmakers start from a positive image of how society should be, citing the c16 here:
The purpose of this Act is to extend the laws in Canada to give effect,
within the purview of matters coming within the legislative authority of
Parliament, to the principle that all individuals should have an
opportunity equal with other individuals to make for themselves the
lives that they are able and wish to have and to have their needs
accommodated, consistent with their duties and obligations as members of
society
From that they derive that defining yourself is one of your freedoms and while other people do not have to agree with you, they shall not be allowed to harass, discriminate or derive you of your rights. Pretty simple actually.
Sounds as if one has to learn Klingon before going to Canada.
