Why do some people seem to think high sec sentry guns are cosmetic? I remember some time last year to my surprise seeing a high sec gate gun open fire in Udema on a catalyst and a Hurricane instantly popped it before the dessie got a second volley off on the Sigel it was firing at (Sigil died in 3 jumps later to the same ganking corp anyways which was funny). CONCORD police captain got most of the catalysts, but 3 just were not killed by it because players got to some of them first.
I asked around some NS people if there were sentry guns on the gates in high sec. Of the responses I got, 23 were essentially “I don’t know. CONCORD kills criminals in HS. Do the gate guns exist?” 3 were “I thought they were cosmetic? Not sure. Do they open fire?” (which is what I thought before) 3 gave me “yes they exist” and 1 was “yeah, if I didn’t see them on the overview I wouldn’t know they were real”
Clearly in high sec gate guns do exist. No one said the blatantly wrong “no they don’t exist.” But at the same time, some people just don’t seem to think they do anything. I don’t know why I thought they were cosmetic. They have the same name as the gate guns in low sec, I should have expected them to be the same thing. So I made an assumption that in hindsight was kind of dumb. But clearly I wasn’t the only one who thought they were cosmetic.

No one except gankers and low sec status characters really care for them, which is the majority of players. They are as good as just being cosmetics as far as the majority of players is concerned. Edit: Oh… and yeah… I think Faction Warfare players need to watch out for them if they are in hostile space, but I’m not 100% sure.
Because of that, they are one of the first things you remove from your overview and forget that they even exist.

That’s correct, they’re only relevant to inattentive mission runners, FW players, and gankers. The same goes for the empire police and customs ships. The latter may fine you for accidentally hauling slaves through the federation, the former will (ineffectively, they don’t have scram/point) try to kill you if your standings are low enough.
The exception is the Trigs in minor victories. Werposts will kill you if you don’t warp out within a couple seconds, and Trig fleets will scram you. EDENCOM only attack you if you have negative standings, and they’re very ineffective at that, so they’re basically not an issue. You can get the trigs positive to you, so that they will not attack, by simply filamenting into pochven in a meta-fit tech 1 dessy, and killing a single rogue drone.

as the others as said, if your sec status is below a certain point (depending on if you are in 0.5 to 1.0 its different for each)
and if your faction standings are below -5.00 you can be shot at
though its different entities for each..
Faction Police will get you for low sec status
Faction Navy for low standings with faction.
Whenever you lose security status through suspect or criminal offenses in low or high security space, any sentry gun on grid will engage you. The sentry guns will continue engaging you for as long as you remain on grid.
No aggression is carried over after leaving the grid where you performed your initial act, so even though you’re still a suspect or a criminal there’s no further aggression from those or other sentry guns once you warp off-grid. Just remember that a new act of aggression that causes you to lose more of your security status, such as continuing to pod someone in low security space after initial aggression, would trigger another response from present sentry guns. But they too can easily be reset by bouncing to an off-grid tactical and back

I can’t call a process “simple” if there is no in-game way to find this out. If someone never used external resources they will just get blapped by NPCs in high sec.
People seem to know this happens in LS. When I asked about HS responces were “I don’t know?” “I think they’re cosmetic but don’t quote me I’m not sure” or “yes they do fire, exactly the same as their low sec counterparts”
I have seen them at gates and stations. To my surprise, I was in Pochven and a station there was surrounded by 8 disintegrator cannons, when I noticed them on approach. However they didn’t open fire on my ship as it docked. I assume that is because my character has neutral status with the Triglavians?
Have fun!

That was changed some time ago, where neutral status they wont attack you.
I was showing you that yes, they attack you in hisec.. the ones “who don’t know” apparently never leave lowsec with a negative status to know that they’ll attack you, or have a low enough status they won’t attack you.
You can ask in the rookie channel. Or your starter corp. Or just about any player corp that isn’t composed entirely of new players.
I didn’t check recently, but as of last year no one in the rookie channel knew anything about how to stop trigs from shooting you.
At least I wasn’t this guy
Triglavian fleet in Perimeter. : r/Eve
trigs won’t shoot at you if you are 0.00 or 0.01
and unless in the beginning of the war, you fought against them, its not that difficult to go from 0.0 to 0.01

Sentry guns in high sec do work and will engage on gates or stations if aggression is made in an unwarranted way, ie suicide ganking. Applying 176dps omni damage to the initial aggressor. This is why youll often see a tanked cruiser or above engaging first on a gate to pull sentry aggro so that smaller ships can aggress freely afterwards for the full time till Concord response.
Another old tactic when there was no warp to zero on gates(circa 2003-2006) was for snipers to sit beyond 150kms from the nearest sentry gun and snipe and gank from range before the target could slow boat the 15kms to the gate.
