How to not get caught while hacking?

Hey guys so I have a question here. I am not really a new player since I’ve started my main character about two years ago (this isn’t my main) ever since I got betrayed and blown up in low sec by someone who I thought was becoming a friend I took a break for a little bit and then I just got back into the game this summer again and now that I kind of know what I’m actually doing in wormhole space the only times I’ve gotten caught in wormhole space (not including low sec) is when I’m at a data/relic site decloaked and hacking into the container and yes I am d-scanning constantly but the thing is I see others on my d-scanner and I think
“Hmm okay a Astero or Raptor that’s cool I’ll just keep an eye out for them on my d-scanner and see if they launch any combat probes to come and find me”
but the thing is they don’t have to and then all of a sudden BOOM the Raptor or Astero is right on my data/relic site 3 km away from me and they already have me warp scrambled before I can even react.
So I guess my question is what am I doing wrong or not being safe enough while hacking a container? Because that’s the only time I’ve been caught in my covert ops explorer ships.

You aren’t really doing anything wrong. The Astero had the site scanned already (I guess), then snuck up to you cloaked and then provided a warp in for the Raptor. Not much you can do about it.

You could try to pay even more attention and use mods on your ship that lower the align time as much as possible. As soon as you see someone show up on grid, you hit warp to whatever you have pre-selected and then pray. That also means you must make sure that you are not in any way blocked by the hacking container. Keep your distance (2.2km works well) from it so that you do not bump into it while your warp-alignment takes place.

Thanks it just sucks because last night I was doing my own thing leaving everyone else alone exploring for a couple of hours and by that time I was at a data site with about 77 mil worth of loot in my cargo and then the Raptor appears out of nowhere and pops me in my Cheetah no problem.

Those are the perils of dangerous space. You have to be really, really religious about paying attention, and even then you will lose your ships every now and then because someone is even more fanatic about getting you.

Or you do something funny every now and then: Manticore | Bun Bajiro | Killmail | zKillboard Fit your Cheetah for combat and have an alt/buddy with you and surprise the Raptor. That runs the risk of losing something even more expensive of people counter-counter you, but that’s the spice of it.

I guess I was kinda asking for it if I named my Cheetah “Catch Me If You Can”

How much do you get in exploration loot from wormholes nowadays?

Since coming back to the game I learned that higher level wormholes (C4+) are pretty active nowadays because there is some wormhole coalition spread out throught those systems.

I make tens of millions to hundreds of millions an hour in losec exploration, and C1-3 are pretty poor with their level I and II data and relic sites. Is the lemon worth the squeeze for you?

That just depends on what you find including low sec. Some systems there are absolutely nothing and you can tell that another capsuleer as been there to clear out the system of any site others could give you crazy amounts of relic and/or data sites in that one system. Sometimes I could be exploring for couple hours finding nothing but then I stumble across a relic site and one container might give me 40-50 + mil worth of loot by itself. It really just depends on what you are able to find. A good night I might go back to my home station with maybe 70-100 mil worth of loot in my cargo.

Thanks for the info, I’ll stick to losec. I only play an hour or two every couple of days, and from past wormhole experience I generally needed to be online for 2-3 hours at least to get good results. For some subjective reason I feel that in WH scanning down sites is slower. But I’m sure it’s just perception and the stress of following dscan :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

If you consider making your way back to losec don’t forget that ghost sites have a guaranteed minimum of 130mil in their box at the top which doesn’t get blown up. I am lucky enough to hit one of those every 3-4 play sessions, plus the limited and stadard sleeper caches.

Hm that’s interesting I might have to try low sec exploration again. Where do you tend to like to explore? I imagine it’s just quiet low security systems other’s don’t normally go right?

Something like that. I explore in two different regions because one is slower traffic during my timezone on weekdays, and the other during weekends :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Ideally I find a place where I can loop back to a station through a chain of lowsec systems. 6-7 :balance_scale: is a decent amount of systems to go through for a loop.

I rely on the in-game information for traffic, players kills and people in stations. After a couple of days in one region or the other you get to recognize the names of players, and with d-scan I have marked them down which are explorers or not. Knowing if I should just skip the system because it’s likely been depleted of valuables.

I regulary clear the Relic/Datas (the Pirate ones with no NPCs) in my PI-hole to get rid of the signatures.

Its basically 5 minutes per site and the loot is something between 3M and 60M. I’d say on average I get out 10-15M over all sites. For a job that a 50M CovOps can do with lot less skills and investment than a good combat ship would require, thats not too bad. I’d bet I’d made a 100M per evening if I would go explo for like 2 hours.

Some tips:

  • Use a slippery fit. CovertCloak, MWD, Nanofibers, Interdiction Nullifier.
  • I’d not use a WarpCoreStab, most hunters in WHs use a FactionScram with +3 Points. The WCS doesn’t help here. The penalties and the loss of a lowslot isn’t worth it.
  • Never “approach” the hacking container. Use “keep@range” and set it to 2200m. Turn off your MWD once you are in hacking range. Your ship will come to a stop at 2200m while you are hacking, which means you can still loot the container after you are done but you also can cloak immediately if anything happens. Also from a standstill you have the fastest possible align time to warp and you will not bump into the container you hack, even if your warpout is going into this direction.
  • Set your “Orbit” distance to 250.000m (250km). If you can successully cloak, but are in a bubble because an Interdictor warped into your site, klick “orbit” at the enemy ship and no matter how he maneuvers, your ship will always fly directly away from him. Until you can safely warp out (unless he decloaks and kills you, of course). But thats why you fit Nanofibers, they speed you up while moving and help you with aligning out faster.

If you suspect there is another player with you in the wormhole, ALWAYS assume he already has the site bookmarked. Bait him into attacking you. Move towards a container, stop your ship, begin hacking but do not hack. Just wait 20 seconds. Attackers who are already in the site with you often wait until you are distracted with the hack. Just spam DScan with 1AU and watch your overview. If anything appears on either of those, cloak and warpout instantly.

That won’t protect you from all attacks, but quite a few. Against a cloaked Rocket-Purifier with Factionscram, you simply can’t do anything. You are locked and scrammed long before you can warp and he will bump right into you so you cannot even cloak. T3s that decloak right next to you, bump you with an MWD and have a calibration-rig fitted will also often catch you. No tactic is infallable.

if you find a way to not get caught, please bottle it and sell it at Jita.

Cloak up when someone comes into local.

Wait patiently for them to leave.

Carry on hacking.

one does not simply show up in local in a WH

This is the only mistake that needs fixing imo

I guess that’s true. But if there are things on d-scan…

Okay if this is my only mistake then what should I do differently for the future? Cloak immediately if I even just see them on d-scan in WH space?

I don’t have ISK per hour estimate, but with Cowardly Buzzard doctrine I extracted 11 million ISK per WH on average.

Yes. If you have seen them, assume they have seen you and are already on the hunt to kill you.

Scan the next WH, go over and get some distance but stay cloaked there. Wait a few minutes to see if they immediately follow you.

If they do and cloak up without launching probes, you can safely assume they have already scanned and bookmarked multiple systems. Leave the area, make like 5 jumps in HS or LS and scan yourself another WH to keep on exploring.
