I still feel like the "stare at dscan for 45 minutes" meta game doesn't respect my time

lol, you obviously don’t know how Dscan works. Nobody uses 3 Omegas to find someone with Dscan, especially not some lousy Venture.

Maybe she knows something we don’t

No, that’s not what I’m talking about. Any single account player with basic knowledge of dscan, overview filters and camera tracking can pinpoint you within seconds after getting a good idea of the range. Even triangulation can be done solo, but only if your target is either 1) in w-space or 2) a fool who doesn’t even pay attention to Local. Perhaps there’s even apps that replace the old Pirates Little Helper, but I haven’t done a search.

Hey, I remember that, Wadiest! Used it a fair bit, too. 'Twas a nifty little tool.

I don’t (or rarely) use DScan in Highsec. There isn’t the compulsion, I’ve found. Definitely in Lowsec, though (I don’t do Wormholes).

Combat probes are useful. It doesn’t matter in Highsec much, because - let’s face it - your average miner can barely fit a ship let alone cope with tech which requires him to be at his keyboard and paying attention…

I always found it fun, back in NRDS Providence, to instruct newer pilots on how to use dscan. Usually one could hear “jaw bone hits the floor”

Talking about an ingame tool that allows you a good level of control, well, that’s dscan. Nuff said

D-Scan is great, only it would be nice to have it as a module that automatically repeats.
This business of hitting ‘v’ borders on the ridiculous.

I wouldn’t like my dscan results to automatically be overridden.

Keeping a single well timed scan of a fleet or situation is often worth more than having a simple button press automated. I would rather press the button at the right time, angle, distance and direction than to see my previous useful result be deleted by an automated repeation.

That’s worth thinking about I guess. But why would your D-Scan settings be overwritten, module or not?

It’s an argument against automated dscan activation, that’s why.

Why should it weigh more than an argument for automated D-Scan?

Because one is just for convenience, one adds tactical depth. The game is a better game if it offers tactical gameplay instead of boring automatisms. Games need mechanics that people can master to get an edge over other players and Dscan is such a niche where a player can become indeed very good at, getting better than the majority of the other players, opening up chances to outplay them.

Auto-Dscan is also totally overrated in it’s additional safety-gain. Unless you make it nearly constant pinging (few seconds interval), you will miss the tackler that is on the way to you anyway in 90% of all cases. People will complain nonetheless because they expect more than it would deliver, but on the bad side the automatism encourages them further to be lazy and don’t actively pay attention to their environment, finally leading to even more losses in the long run. They wouldn’t even realize how much they could gain from learning how to dscan and growing a habit of being careful when venturing into highly contested space.

Thanks! Those are indeed very good reasons against automated D-Scan.

Time to unbox the drinking bird☺️

D-scan is not just a button you press, d-scan fu is a skill

This !!!

Because when you try to hunt down someone who’s bouncing, and you’re rapidly going through potential locations, the last thing you want is your dscan acting on its own and just do random stuff on wide angle.

Or you want to switch to a potentially more dangerous target. Lots of things are going on when you hunt a target who’s aware.

An automated dscan would only be useful for defensive purposes, to see if anything comes within range. And even that would be automation that ccp most likely would never contemplate. They want active presence behind the keyboard for those who want to stay alive

Re an active module, why waste a slot if ccp already let’s us have it without a slot ?

PS glad you got your eve installation sorted

So you’re saying that the devs at CCP couldn’t program D-Scan to account for players’ settings?

I understand that would require manual input but no one is saying to take out player agency. I don’t see how an automated feature couldn’t be turned off to manual.

D-Scan could have two modes: Defensive - Offensive.

Then this thread is useless. Dare I say, same as most threads in this forum if CCP isn’t going to even consider player input.

Indeed.

Thanks! So am I.

I didn’t say anything about the devs’ ability to program anything. In fact they already did program it that way, because the dscan goes hand in hand with the Overview. And we all know how complicated and deep the Overview is, lol. One of the keys to using the dscan is to make and use a filter with the stuff you want it to show - and you can define those filters via your Overview, most often by slightly adjusting an existing overview filter and saving it for use as a dscan filter.

OP shed a light on what we all know, that EvE has time sinks of all sorts, and that not everyone is happy with that. It’s “informative”. We can try to give a few pointers and lots of explaining and situating, in the hope that whoever needs it is also receptive. That’s about all we can do in a constructive way.

Asking for automation is the least useful element, true, for reasons stated. That does not mean that there are no good suggestions coming from the forums (this one and reddit). Those get picked up by CSM members and passed along, maybe even championed. Key to making a good suggestion is 1) to have a very thorough understanding of what exists and why it was implemented in that way and 2) have very good experience using it in all sorts of conditions, covering different play styles if needed.

btw, here’s a looooong video on the use of dscan by EvE University Twitch
There’s a lot of other instructional ones on YT.

P.S. dscan is also the reason for any sane person to rename his/her :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: ship
P.S. 2 I have dscan on an extra mouse button, literally under my thumb, that makes it quite handy and fast

That’s what I thought about when I renamed my destroyer to the name of a dreadnought

RIP pirates little helper. The most useful 3rd party tool ever made.

Shame the dude the made it stopped maintaining it.

As far as I know, there isn’t a replacement for it.
