I don’t remember that. But I do remember Diablo 3 almost died due to no one but bots playing.
Then they got rid of the real money auction house and ever so slowly actual players tricked back in. But even now, 10 years later it’s not where it should be in terms of player population. Up until last year when D2R was released, more people played D2 than D3 and D2 is an early 2000 game with a max resolution of 800x600.
